There are many reasons why I will be returning to this hotel the next time I'm in Rouen. First, the hospitality and warmth of the proprietor is beyond anything I've experienced elsewhere in France. She is such a genuine and friendly person. As soon as I arrived, I was given a map and an orientation to the city. The owner, and all the staff, spoke enough English to make up for my poor French. She tried to teach me French words and we talked about cuisine. I always felt welcome in this hotel. Her husband was also very friendly and helpful. The strapping young man and charming young lady in the afternoons were also very pleasant.
My room was fully updated recently. I've peeked in a few other rooms and they were as well. There is no air conditioning but I have a nice spacious balcony. The double room also features a lockable closet with shelving, a desk, and a flat-panel television. There is also a bathroom with toilet, shower, and sink. The room is by no means spacious but it is very clean and modern. The sheets and blankets are soft and clean and contribute to the modern, neutral decor. The shower is good and hot, fresh linens are provided each day, and the mattress is firm but comfortable. A small lift is available up to the third floor for those heavy bags.
There are only two things I do not enjoy about the hotel, neither of which I complained about. The first issue is their Wifi service. The signal on the third floor is just so unreliable and slow. Even sending a simple email is a chore. This may not be an issue for some but for others it will be extremely irritating. I found if I went down to the lobby the signal was much better. The owners always offered to make a space for me at the tables and loan me an Ethernet cable. The second issue is the walls are paper thin. If someone is talking on the phone in the next room, you'll hear their whole conversation. This hasn't been an issue at night. During my visit, I noticed a construction worker adding insulation to one of the rooms so perhaps they are making improvements as I type.
All in all, I have to say for the amenities and for the location (at most 10 mins walk to the Cathedral; less than 5 to St-Maclou), this place is a stellar bargain. I've stayed in the hotel for nearly two weeks and can't think of any reason not to return. In fact, I will be back in Rouen next summer and I already know where I'll be staying. Book early though; I noticed their phone rings off the hook and they almost always say they're fully booked!
