When some plans to stay with acquaintances fell through I persuaded my traveling companion that we should go to Abbaye de Fontevraud. Now this place is outside of Saumur and not too easy to find but I had stayed there three or four years previously and had a wonderful experience.
Let me say straight away that neither of us had any problem with our rooms. We did however opt to book all-inclusive (ie dinner & breakfast) We either were not told, or failed to understand, that this gave us a limited menu for dinner.
I have already discussed what follows with the management of the hotel so no surprises for anybody.
On arrival at the small restaurant in the cloisters we established that there were only three other couples dining (Monday evening). The waiter who certainly needed a shower and a clean suit - to be frank I regret to say he smelled rather bad- handed us a piece of paper which was our predetermined 3 course menu. I recognized quenelles of salmon but didn't (at that time) recognize the fish name 'lieu' (pollock).
The quenelles were quite average although my companion claimed they were out of a packet.
The main course consisted of a 3" diameter round of some layers of fish, tomato and maybe eggplant . In any event it was cold and we sent it back. It was returned very quickly, presumably having been microwaved but was still cold in parts and distinctly unappetising. Pollock is not a pretty fish.
I am entirely unaccustomed to poor food in French restaurants and after brief discussion with my companion we rejected the food and despite protestations by the staff, left the restaurant.

The following morning I paid for our rooms and for the wine we had ordered. I had a discussion with the managing director of the hotel who appeared empathetic but had no real answer to the issues or why we had been served such disgusting food. I suspect that they have some sort of corporate attitude to this.
I declined to take breakfast or re-enter the restaurant.
Sadly I am unconvinced that our complaint was taken seriously.
Stay at Abbaye by all means but have a care in the restaurant - NOT recommended
What did we eat that night? We went into Saumur to the main square and had omelette au jambon and frites - delicious.

“The Abbey has rooms”

Hotellerie Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud

30 May 2008

This was the highlight of our trip staying in a 10th Century Abbey
with modern very nice rooms. Henry II,his wife Eleanor of Aquaitaine and their son Richard the Lionheart are buried here.
The Abbey is beautiful, the grounds wonderful and the small town is delightful. It's a walk in the past to tour this beautiful ediface. The restaurant is excellent with charming atmosphere, but be prepared to spend a lot of money for dinner. The breakfast is also very good, and better priced.

This hotel in the midst of the ancient and well preserved Abbaye sounded too intriguing to pass up. The hotel is in the old Prierie St Lazare which is somewhat separated from the other abbaye buildings as it housed the lepers. They had their own chapel and cloisters (now the restaurant) which made it self sufficient for the nuns.

We were thrilled to be allowed in after hours in order to check in and drop our luggage. Parking is just offsite and is secure.

Check in was interesting, they seemed to be working in a temporary location at a portable desk. Despite that the clerks were acting like they were in a 5 star location.

We had a suite with a small extra room for our son. The room was nice, modern, clean with plenty of fuzzy towels, and bathroom amenities.

The restaurant was booked so we ventured out into the small village and ate at the Brasserie across the street. The food was good, and service entertaining and we enjoyed the quiet evening open air dinner.

I especially enjoyed walking the grounds of the abbaye during the late evening hours when the light made the soft tuffa stone glow gold. We visited the abbaye the next morning without charge due to our hotel stay and felt it was so full of history. Elinor of Aquitaine, easily one of the most influential women of the middle ages lived her last days here and is buried along side her husband, King Henry II of England, and her son King Richard of England. Two of the most powerful kings of England...buried in the countryside of France! (But of course it belonged to England when they died).

We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend the hotel to those with a desire for history. I hear the food is good.

Good value for money -- obviously on the British Classic Car Clubs' routes; [chapter of the AH3000 owners club during our visit] so repeat [British] business happens. We had a wonderful room overlooking the back of the [huge] abbey complex. What was less good was the safety issue that the bath/shower had no hand rails [etc], and that the dinner menu appeared to not change. The once we eat there was excellent; the other days we dined at restaurants in the village. Would I go back? Probably not, for there are many places to go in France :) But would I recommend the experience to friends? Yes, I would.

The restaurant here is superb, and I cannot fault it in any way, but the rooms were a big disappointment, which spoilt the over all experience. I don't really know how to be complimentary about our room - it was small and dingy, the furnishings had seen better days and the shower room was tiny, and badly in need of refurbishment and upgrade, all of which was a huge disappointment in such a beautiful setting, and with such a good restaurant. We will certainly visit the restaurant again, but I won't be falling over myself to stay there until it has had a makeover!
