Everything about this hotel suggested that it would be exceptional: it is a Relaix & Chateaux property, its room rates are high, and the reviews are generally glowing. But it didn't live up to my expectations. Yes, it is a lovely place. It is situated a short walk outside of the center of Aix-en-Provence, making it quieter than most other places. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, and I could go out french doors to a small, private garden. However, the public space is overly decorated, especially the bar and dining area. The food is very good, though the dinner menu does not change. After dinner, the hotel employees scurry to clean up and go home so if you want to stay up and have a drink at the bar, forget it. The staff rarely seems to go out of its way for its guests. I was also surprised that the hotel doesn't ask that its guests dress appropriately for dinner (a jacket for the men, etc.), considering what I expected to be the upscale nature of the place. I was seated next to someone in a tee shirt and jeans and others were similarly dressed.
Keep in mind that my expectations were high, perhaps overly so. Villa Gallici is a lovely place and is supposed to be the nicest hotel in Provence. I was comfortable during my stay, but for what I paid I expected better.
