My fiance and I stayed at the Hotel Splendid for a week in August. We found the room to be very typical and French. Upon first glance of the hotel we were amazed by the location of the hotel to the beach. You can honestly walk anywhere from the hotel - to the beach, shops, restaurants, train station, etc. The rooms are a bit small and if you are requesting a big bed, don't expect anything other than a full size bed (not a queen, king). The bathrooms are surprisingly bigger than you would expect for a European hotel. Every day you can get breakfast downstairs or for the same price you can get it delievered to your room and at an hour of your choice. The breakfast was honestly one of the highlights with a nice typical French breakfast of coffee, yogurt, cheeses, crossiants, bread, juice. I would suggest to have it delivered to your rooms. The rooms are all air conditioned with safes in the room, hairdyers, as well as a flat screen tv. Every day there is service to the room or you can opt to have them clean the place if you sleep in later.

IF you are debating between rooms on the Suquet side or the beach I would choose the less expensive since the rooms all look out to the old port (not really the beach) and there are restaurants below the ocean view side, so it would be more worthwhile to save that extra money and take a Suquet view and spend your money on the private beaches. Restaurant suggestions for around that area are right behind the hotel. Au Bureau is a bar there and they have amazing food even though it looks like a bar. Also, I would suggest for the beaches to take the time to do a private beach (both public and private are within walking distance from the Hotel). Be careful of where you go since we had reservations one day at Noga and went expecting the 2nd row only to be told when we showed up that we were on the 4th row. We left quickly and went to a few other places finally settling on a place called Cannes Club Beach. We went here a few times and really had great service, plus there weren't a lot of lounge chairs there so you have an excellent view of the beach from any of the spots you pick. Also, Hotel Splendid will give you beach towels so don't worry about bringing your own!! Have a great stay!!

“Nothing Splendid about Hotel Splendid”

Hotel Splendid

The sweetest thing about this hotel are the sweets that greet you at the front door because thats where the sweetness ends. Of the thousands of hotels that my partner and I have stayed at over the years, this was perhaps the worst when it comes to service. The staff were rude and unhelfpul and pretty much ripped us off. They put us in a city view room when we had paid for an ocean view and would not upgrade us even though we had booked it that way with our travel agent.

Once we got into the room, the air conditioning didn't work and the constant 'whirr' of a fan in the bathroom annoyed us as it could not be turned off. When we contacted reception to ask them about the airconditioning they told us nothing could be done about it as it wasn't working. I then packed up all my things and sent Mike down to reception to ask them for a refund as Air conditioning was a basic ammenity we expected and we wanted to go to another hotel. It was only then that they advised us that air conditioning wasn't working on 2 floors and they would move us to another room.

The only thing better about the new room was that the air con worked. None of the rooms have Blockout curtains, which means that even in the middle of the night there is never total darkness in the room. The reason for this is because the hotel is located in a very bright area near the port and many restaurants and bars.

Also, if you like to stand up in the shower - no such luck. Most hotels in Europe have movable shower heads and this hotel is no exception. However the shower head is stationed at the edge of the bath with nowhere to hook the shower head on the wall if you wish to stand up and take a shower. The bath is also quite narrow so its a rather uncomfortable experience sitting in the bath trying to shower (and I am a small woman).

And if all that isn't enough for you, there a plumbing problems in the building so there are lots of strange noises in the middle of the night from the plumbing.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. It looks nice from the outside but once you get inside it will all turn sour.
Best of luck finding another hotel in Cannes

I booked this room from the comments on TripAdvisor, but was shocked at the first room they tried to give us. The first room they tried to give us was terrible. Very shabby, not insulated from street noise and lots of mildew in the shower. As we were getting ready to check into another hotel...they found another room for us...what a completely different experience. Top floor, newly renovated - even with a flat-screen TV, insulated from street noise, and a great view. The breakfast is OK but make sure it is included with the cost of the room or else they will charge you 17 euros...definitely not worth that much. The staff is pleasant but sometimes needs to be prodded to be helpful.

“DELIGHTFUL WITH DRAWBACKS”

Hotel Splendid

26 Jul 2004
24/25 found this review helpful

I stayed here in July 2004. The location was perfect. Opposite the palais and the harbour and a stroll from Rue D'Antibes. The room was delightful. Very large with antique furniture and baskets of fruit. The bathroom had windows and was huge too. There were complimentary toiletries and towelling robes. Very un-Cannes in their generosity. The biggest delight was the balcony. It was very large with lilos and chairs and a table, with the most stunning view of Cannes - all the way from the Croisette across the harbour to the old town. It was sensational. The most romantic view I have ever seen, and the best view from any hotel I have ever stayed in.

The drawbacks - the room was 180 euros per night, but that did include breakfast. The breakfast can be served in your room or on the pretty 2nd floor terrace. But the choice of food was very limited, and the cheeses and meat were a liitle cheap, i.e., processed. Oddly, the only hot food available for breakfast were chicken wings!!!

Then the guests: frosty faced old harridans and snooty middle aged middle class Europeans (and I am British) with a permanent smell up their noses (yet some of them had the wiff of polyester about them!) ! The staff were ultra friendly but not the guests.

The only English channels on the tv were CNN and BBC World.

No bar in the hotel. There is a fridge in the room, but you have to go shopping to fill it.

The main drawback for me was the reception. Very friendly, but oh dear, they lock the door at about 10.00pm at night. So when we returned from dinner we had to ring the bell to get back in. We then changed and went back out for drinks and had to ring to get back in again! The thing was, the porter wasn't always there so we had to wait for what felt like a long time! Not what I expect from an upmarket hotel, more like a British bed and breakfast. I also felt like we were being snooped on - when paying these prices I don't want to feel as if my every coming and going is being monitored.

Overall the hotel was charming, with fabulous views. A mix of upmarket old fashioned rooms but guesthouse amenties. But it did remind me of that old movie: Death in Venice.

Advice: if you like modern hotels with the sort of efficient service (and non-nosey staff) you get then try the Gray D'Albion (which would have actually been cheaper), or pay extra for the Intercontinental.

If you want to stay here and want the views I had you MUST get a room on the 5th floor. If you go lower you get no views becuae the trees in the garden block any view. The rooms below the 5th floor are much cheaper but defeat the whole point of staying here: the outstanding location and views.

The Hotel Splendid is a wonderful charming hotel on Cannes Harbor. Its ideally located to shopping (the Rue Meynadier"my favorite") and sightseeing(the Crossette,Le Sequet, the Palais Festvals and the beaches "also my favorite").Mdm.Cagnat made us feel at home.We had a very nice room overlooking the Harbor. We were pleasently surprized when they sent up bottle of champaign a few minutes after we arrived,What hospitality! The hotel has a lot of History and the experience of staying there was the highlight of our visit to Cannes. The rooms are large by european standards and the bathroom had a big bathtub.
Breakfast is available on the 2nd floor breakfast room or the terrace. We stayed at this hotel both times we visitedCannes and are sure to be back!
