We just returned from 4 nights at Chevre D'Or. Overall, it was a charming, luxurious Old World experience with fine food and service in a matchless setting.
To enjoy the experience fully, one has to accept that the hotel is expensive. It is indeed true that a glass of Krug on the ramparts is 32 euros...but it comes with some lovely canapes and a view that cannot be matched. It is on a par with other Relais&Chateaux properties and overall (with its location and setting) provides an incomparable experience.
We booked back-to-back "Discovery" packages, which included continental breakfasts, 2 tasting dinners in the gastronomic restaurant, and free admission to Eze's gardens at the top of the mountain. (Those were extraordinary and well worth seeing!)
The reservation and concierge staff were very helpful, even before we arrived. We used extensive email to ask about tours, trip details, etc. They provided information on day tours and booked them for us.
The desk and concierge staff are excellent; service in the restaurant is also excellent. Our two tasting dinners were great but the amount of food was a bit overwhelming...so go hungry! The chef very kindly devised a different menu for our second dinner, to avoid duplication. He is very skilled and some of the dishes were amazingly inventive, quite whimsical (tomato ice cream!).
My husband enjoyed the sauna and jacuzzi; I had an injured knee and did not venture down that far. Venture down, you say?
Well, yes! The hotel, like the town, is carved into the mountain. It is all on various levels, for example, to get to the entrance you walk along the garden (which is in terraces below the walkway), then up a flght to reception. The ramparts bar is across the way and down a flight. The rooms are up and down one or more flights...the restaurant is up two flights from where you have your glass of champagne before dinner....you get the idea. Be aware that the tiny public town street (a footpath) runs right by the rooms, which are tucked into buildings about town.
The town is enchanting but not acommodating for the mobility-impaired. I am fairly vigorous except for the knee injury and I was not able to go freely around the hotel and town. I brought hiking staffs and they enabled me to go to the top once to see the wonderful Jardin Exotique, withouth them I doubt I'd have made it. I did not feel free to just ramble through the winding town streets--if you can, do it because it's like a fairy tale experience! There are many little shops and cafes along the way. There is a shop at the foot of the town open Mon-Sat. We bought six-packs of Evian water there.
Beyond the town, there is an extraordinary hike down to the Mediterranean Sea on a narrow rocky trail. If you are in shape, you will be rewarded with a vigorous workout and exceptional views that you will not forget. My husband enjoyed it very much.
Our room was excellent for our purposes...#17. It was only a flight of stairs up from the entry and a flight below reception, which is VERY GOOD for the hotel and town. (Merci beaucoup to the reservation staff--I had sent an email a couple of weeks before we arrived, mentioning the knee injury!) The room had a lovely ocean and hillside view. Housekeeping and turndown service were very good (great chocolates at turndown); the towels and bath amenities were of very good quality.
A few caveats about the room: (1) Some maintenance/upkeep seems to have been deferred--a few scuffed spots on the walls, an electronic safe that had to be fixed upon checkin, a doorknob that grew loose. But then, the buildings are hundreds of years old, it's near the end of the season, and the remodeling inside provides a very good level of comfort. (2) LOW CEILINGS in some parts--watch your head! (3) In our room, there was a "fancy" shower that supposedly provided massage features, multiple jets, etc. It trickled. I would have preferred a regular shower head with a good spray. (4) Beware the gap between shower door and marble sill! When showering, water runs down the door and onto the sill and marble floor. If you are unaware of this, you can get a nasty surprise...the more so because the shower is at the head of a short flight of marble stairs leading to the bedroom! Folding the bath mat and closing the shower door over it remedies the problem. (5) It was periodically noisy the first night, with people talking loudly as they left the restaurant after midnight. We spoke to the concierge and the noise was much less the other nights.
Overall, however, if we come back we'd ask for the same room again.
