“Not Impressed!!”

La Bastide Saint Antoine Jacques Chibois

26 Oct 2007

The restaurant is clearly the focal point at this property. In re to the hotel part, rooms were weak, service even weaker (borderline non-existent) and prices silly (for what you get). Couldn't believe the quality of the accomodations and the service of the hotel. Restaurant was beautiful and the food was a pleasure. Yes, food is expensive but you come in knowing that. It's haute cuisine and that's what you pay for. But the poor rooms and service at the front desk stuck in my head. Come for the restaurant (with the appropriate price expectations) but stay elsewhere. Otherwise, you will be disappointed. Don't be a chump and fall for the pictures.

We stayed here for a few days for a special anniversary. Wildly expensive but worth it . There have been some mumblings about the standard of Jacques Chibois food lately so we were a bit worried that it would not be up to scratch but with the exception of one dessert the food was exceptionally good and we can understand why he might well get his third Michelim star soon - the hotel is a little way out of Grasse, overlooking the bay of Cannes though the hinterland is being developed so the view is probably not as good as it once was. Nice looking swimming pool, garden and small library. Our room overlooked the garden, was roomy with a grand bathroom - lots of marble, Tv , minibar etc and unusually for France a kettle with tea/coffee etc. On our first night we were welcomed with an impressive selection of fresh and dried fruit. Not for families or couples looking to spend the day in the hotel as sitting-about space is limited otherwise the hotel has everything you could want from a small luxury hotel but the restaurant is at its heart - dining on the terrace overlooking the bay, with service to die for and food that blends the latest modern style with traditional provencal cooking and tastes sublime - a wine list that allows a choice of fairly modest to several thousand pounds a bottle is really something. No shorts or trainers in the retaurant - and rightly so it is a very special place.
We found service at breakfast a bit hit and miss, things got forgotten nearly every day but omissions were soon put right and the breakfast terrace makes even this meal seem romantic - As well as the food the real stars were the staff - efficient, hard working and all of them absolutley charming.

“Focus is on Restaurant, Not Overnight Guests”

La Bastide Saint Antoine Jacques Chibois

Just returned from a four night stay at this Bastide as part of an overall ten night stay in Paris and Provence. The property is very beautiful, with territorial views of the hills of the Inland Riviera, luxuriant and fragrant landscaping, and peaceful courtyards and terraces, many with trickling fountains. We used Grasse as a base to explore the countryside, including Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Monaco and some of the other inland mountain villages.

As nice as the property was, I felt that the emphasis here is definitely on the serving the lunch and dinner guests of the restaurant (which is excellent, though exorbitantly expensive). Even for a facility with only 17 rooms and one apartment, the staff seemed to be insufficient. When we arrived at the bastide, there was no warm welcome, no one to help us with our luggage, and and only one of the two rooms we had requested and confirmed (one king and one with two twins) was correct. The front desk staff made me feel that this situation was my mistake, although to their credit, I did receive one upgraded room for two of the four nights we stayed at no additional cost.

During our stay there were several unnerving mix-ups with the keys for both our rooms and our rental car. Again, the front desk made me feel responsible for their inability to keep track of the keys. The front desk also seemed puzzled when asked questions about sightseeing opportunities in the area--their forte was booking reservations for lunch and dinner at the restaurant.

The property is definitely worth a visit for lunch or dinner, but for the price I would probably stay somewhere else on my next visit to the region.

“Fabulously appointed but disappointed”

The hotel is situated on the edges of Grasse on a hillside. It is a beautifully appointed hotel all done in immaculate taste. The gardens are large and there is a small pool on one of the terraces that cascade down from the garden.

We had a mid priced (for the hotel) room in the main building overlooking the garden. It was a good size with bathroom with bath and high tech shower and a separate toilet and bidet. Large comfortable bed. Terracotta tiles on the floor and real feeling of light and air. All done in immaculate taste. Bowl of fruit in the room on arrival.

The main issue with these rooms is that they overlook the dining terrace where dinner goes on until midnight. There is aircon in the rooms and with the windows closed the noise is muted but if you want the windows open they are noisy. At this price I felt this was unacceptable.

Dinner when we ate there was indoors as the weather was deemed unreliable. This was a a shame as actually it was a warm evening but it takes them hours to set up and clearly the decision had been taken earlier in the day. Lots of very attentive staff and sommeliers. Vast wine list but knowledge staff. We chose a 5 course set menue at vast cost.

The restaurant has 2 Michelin stars so we were expecting something special. Frankly it was dull with only one dish of pasta with wild mushrooms being interesting. There was also an unacceptable delay between 2 courses which at this price they should be embarrassed about. Bluntly it was not worth the money and they not deserve there star rating.

They also do wedding receptions and there was one there the evening we ate in. They dine in a separate room but we could have done without the bad mariachi band playing as we had aperitifs on the terrace and they had their champagne recpetion in the garden. I also wonder if some of the slowness on dinner was due to the kitchen being under strain.

The staff at reception were courteous and helpful in making restaurant bookings.

Overall the hotel felt very "corporate" with little personal touch. If that is what you want then fine. I felt they are very pleased with themselves and resting on their laurels.

Grasse has little to recommend for itself. It is a very confusing to drive around and there were a lot of roadworks. We got lost several times. The instructions to find the hotel on their website worked perfectly.

“Lovely Property, Awful Service”

La Bastide Saint Antoine Jacques Chibois

26 Apr 2007

My wife and I stayed at La Bastide Saint Antoine for our anniversary getaway weekend. The property is fabulous and our suite was spacious and well appointed. The problem was that we had booked a jacuzzi suite and the first evening we discovered that the jacuzzi was not functioning properly. The computer readout indicated the water was 33C and that there was a problem with the filtration system. We reported the poroblem to the front desk staff the following morning and asked that the fix it while we were out for the day. When we returned that evening the problem was not resolved. We phoned the front desk and they said there was nothing they could do at this hour. We paid €600/night for a jacuzzi suite and couldn't make use of
the prime attraction in our booking. The front desk staff were pleasant but had no authority to remedy the bill so we were asked to pay in full and were assured the manager would call us the following day.

This is were the service experience moved from bad to unacceptable. The manager, Jean-Pierre Hall did not call me as agreed, so I called him the following day and was informed he was busy and left a message. This scenario went on for days until I finally got him on the phone late that same week. He said he would review the situation and get back to me. I had to chase him again as that call never came and after nearly another full week of phone messages unreturned I spoke with him and he agreed to a €100/night credit. Tired of the battle I accepted this offer (although we could have stayed in a standard room for less than half the price, the point of getting the suite was the jacuzzi).

Unfortunately, now several weeks since he made that agreement, my credit card has yet to be credited. I called earlier this week and asked that he call me. He sent an email indicating he would review it
with his accountant. I cannot recommend a luxury property that has such poor customer service.
