We stayed here two nights -- to be on the Riviera but not in the more expensive places like Cannes and St. Tropez. The hotel is very central, charming, clean, with huge rooms and a very comfortable king-size bed. Breakfast was fine. We ate in the hotel one night, as we had arrived late -- very sophisticated food, a tad expensive. Staff was helpful in showing us how to park our car in city lot at minimal expense. Driving the Cornice L'Esterel is highly recommended: spectacular ocean/cliff views, with fewer tourists than above Nice. Two minor complaints about hotel: our windows wouldn't open (noice-reducing inner windows -- they did work on the noise) and no free internet access.

My wife and I plus our 3 years old daughter recently spent a week in this hotel. Lovely old property with a small pool and lots of greenery and flowers. We booked a triple room overlooking the pool and garden with views across Frejus to the mountains. To be honest we may as well have had a double room without the view and saved 40 euros per night as we were out most of the day and the room simply served as a place to wash and sleep. We skipped breakfast at 10 euros each and used the local boulangerie and cafe bars instead. The restaurant in the hotel is very expensive but apparently very good (beyond our budget I'm afraid).
This was only our second trip to France so I cannot comment on many other towns there but I cannot understand the negative comments regarding Frejus. It has a lovely beach (a fair walk), a marina complex (on the way to the beach) with bars and restaurants. A beautiful town square with a 13th century chapel and baptistry with small museum. A Roman amphitheatre. Twice weekly food markets with superb produce. Several quality restaurants with good value menus. Several bars and some of the finest bread and pastry shops I have encountered. After 3 or 4 days of this maybe you get itchy feet. No problem catch the TGV 5 minutes from the hotel to Nice, Cannes, Monaco, Marseille, Avignon or even Paris. You want to go to St Tropez catch the bus 10 minutes from the hotel. You want to do some serious walking then head for the Esterel flanking the whole coastline. If you cannot find enough to do here you are not trying hard enough. We will be back in 2005.

At 95 euro per night, this was the best value of the nine hotels we stayed in during our recent trip through France and Italy. The place is nice: newer rooms, great staff, cute little pool area.

We stayed in Frejus to break up a drive... it served its purpose, and we walked around a bit before eating dinner outside. While it was a perfectly pleasant place, I can't imagine that anyone would want to visit the town when there are so many more interesting areas in southern France.

Lovely hotel in the old part of Frejus (not near the beach though). Great place to relax and chill by the pool which is surrounded by palm trees and really is an oasis of calm.

We stayed two nights and didn't eat in the hotel (apart from breakfast) as it was extremely expensive (70 EUROS plus) for dinner. Lots of restaurants within walking distance however. Hotel also offers secure parking in a little street maybe 100m away at a cost of 10 EUROS/day which was well worth it.

Staff excellent and very efficient re my online booking.

We spent 6 nights at Hotel L'Arena July, 2004. The hotel was very pretty, tropical gardens and flowers trellace up and down the sides of the hotel - there is a master gardener somewhere at this hotel! The rooms are simple, very clean, decorated in Provence colours and style. The hotel is extremely cozy. There is a small pool located in the centre of the hotel which is never very busy (you can always get a lounge chair). We brought our children with us, ages 7 and 9, and it was nice to sit by the pool while the kids swam because the atmosphere (orange trees, huge pineapple trees) was extremely beautiful. There is a mix of people with families and couples on their own at the hotel and all of the children were very well behaved. The staff were very polite but did not speak a lot of English so you'd better be prepared to try out your French or you'll end up with a few surprise meals! Our children both speak French and it really came in handy when ordering meals. The cost of the room included breakfast. You can eat inside or outside in a gorgeous shaded poolside restaurant. Lunch was pretty reasonably priced for the Riveria area, however we found dinner to be very pricey (although very tasty!) so we ate outside of the hotel most nights and only treated ourselves to a hotel dinner once. It was just too expensive. The only big downfall of the hotel is that it is in Frejus. The town of Frejus itself isn't really worth the visit, it's very run down and not very exciting compared to the other towns/cities in the Cote D'Azur. We decided to stay in Frejus for location (it's central in the Riveria) and because you can walk to restaurants and have access to amenities (which we needed when travelling with kids). If you are staying in Frejus for location (it's right smack in the middle of the Cote D'Azur so you can visit towns and cities all along the cost within a 2 hour drive max) then I would definately recommend L'Arena. It's in a great location within the town and there really isn't a nicer hotel in the area.
