“Excellent location”

Mercure Nice Promenade des Anglais

We had a room at the side of the Hotel overlooking a side street off the Promenade des Anglais - but still had a sea view from the small balcony. Quadraple glazing kept the traffic noise out.
The en-suite room was clean and of adequate size with a modern flat-screen TV that worked!
Early risers got the best of the breakfast which consisted of the usual continental style plus cerial, bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, tea, coffee. However, clean cutlery, glasses and fruit juice became in short supply towards the end of service.
We parked our hire car in a multi-story car park under the Hotel shared by the Casino and the Meridian Hotel as well as the general public - it cost 23 Euros a night and there is no practical alternative.
Because of the volume of traffic, one-way systems, parking restrictions and pedestrianised areas - driving in Nice is a bit of a nightmare - so it might be an idea to re-consider whether you really need a hire car especially for a short break.
With dozens of restaurants and bars within a few minutes walk and excellent public transport, a car really isn't worth the bother unless you want/need to travel further afield.

Just stayed 4 days at the Mercure. Location great and staff really friendly and helpful especially Jacques on reception he was a real character and spoke great English. We were given a room facing the garden/sea front (room 302) which had a balcony and were very pleased with this. The double window doors and double glazing kept the traffic noise out very efficiently. Yes the décor is "in your face" terracotta and turquoise which does need calming down but you get used to it. The room was clean but the bathroom whilst clean does need a new toilet in my fussy opinion – it seemed to suffer limescale although a proper scrub with a brush and a decent cleaning fluid should shift it. I noticed it was the same in the reception loo too – the water seemed very hard so this probably contributes. This was my only negative and why I am awarding 4 not 5 stars - toilets must be sparkling and are the first thing I inspect on my travels!! The room was ultra quiet even with residents in the rooms either side we never heard a peep. Beds were so so and not what I call really comfortable they were those French foam mattresses again which I don’t like as they are hot and get ruts where bodies have laid. I prefer a sprung mattress.
Breakfast was great – a lovely selection of lots of different breads and rolls. On a couple of days the restaurant did suffer from volume and not enough staff to run around clearing up and setting up tables and getting dishes and cutlery washed and back out for use again – maybe they need to buy more! A few tables had a side sea view which was nice. I really liked it here and would return again despite my one misgiving above.

Bus fares in Nice have been reduced from 1.30 to 1 euro so we went on daytrips to Monte Carlo, Menton and Villa Ephrussi Rothschild for 1 euro!! Amazing value. The dearest fare was 4 euro for a day pass which gets you to the airport as well. The Villa is wonderful do go if you get a chance. For original Nicoise food check out Lou Nissart 1 rue de l’Opera just off Place Massena by the fountain – get there early as it is popular with lots of locals! We were not so happy at L’Ecurie with their “Nicoise” Salad it was just a plate of tomato and onion with 4 anchovies and half an egg – not a bit of tuna or artichoke in sight! We dressed up smart one day and splurged on a really posh lunch at the Negresco Hotel (only 55 euros each including wine and tea/coffee) and it was lovely and service was just tip top - it was also fantastic to see inside the Negresco which is like an art gallery. If you like your cakes go to the Multari Viennese Patisserie on Rue de la Liberte and buy something delicious to eat whether it be cakes, sandwiches or breads at silly (low) prices – they also do miniature reduced sugar cakes (presumably to accommodate the ageing and thus diabetes prone population?).
For culture checkout the newly opened Musee Massena next door to the Negresco it contains a fascinating social history of Nice and was just the right size to visit – not too many things to overload your senses.
Nice was a little haven of sun in the middle of winter – it is windy and cold at home as I write my review and I know where I’d much rather be! Enjoy.

I chose this hotel for its location and I was not disappointed. It was 10 steps of the promenade and a great location. I asked for the "garden view" room because it has a partial view of the sea and cheaper than the "sea view". It was great.
The hotel was clean and the staff was very friendly. Check in was not until 12 but my wife and I showed up at 9am and they were able to put us in our room. When we checked out they let us keep our bags in thier luggage room until we left Nice later that night.
The only odd thing was the bed. There was a sheet over the mattress and a comforter on top but not top sheet.
It was a last minute trip so we paid 115 euro for the night

Have been to the hotel 3 times in Spring, Summer and Fall. The location can't be beat. The service is "french" so to say. Arrogant and snubby. BUT who cares. the location and rooms are adequate, no need for a car, but we had one and parked in the garage that could be walked down to directly from the hotel. Wasn't guarded, but no prob. Book early and ask for best price! Will return again in March.

Occupying the lower (but not ground) two floors of the famous Meridien Hotel, this Mercure is priced as a budget property in comparison. Its small and very basic lobby is quite misleading – the also small elevators take you up to the 2nd or 3rd floors where you will find large orange corridors that seem like a 70 flash-back… The hotel offers several room categories: courtyard, garden, and sea. Go for the garden as it is also sea-view. I booked a courtyard and was upgraded at no cost. The rooms are quite spacious (for Europe) and have a renovated feel. Clean and well appointed, with plasma, queen bed (downed comforter), and full length bay windows (soundproof) opening onto narrow balcony. My deal incuded breakfast, and I took full advantage of the nice buffet which offered many breads and croissants, several hot dishes, fresh fruits and yogurts, cold-cuts and cheeses, cereals, premium jams and butter, and etc. I booked directly with the Mercure website and got a HUGE discount.
