We read all the reviews and booked, because the hotel was well reviewed, cheap and clean.
We enjoyed the helpfulness of the owner Esther, the heating and the garden outside, but no one had mentioned the steps! There were around 20 to carry one's suitcase down from the entrance to our room below and then 26 outside, from our room to the garden gate for every trip outside! We coped but some might find them difficult.
It was too cold to sit outside in the evening and of course, there was no other communal area. We found 'happy as Larry' notes helpful and took them with us, (N.B.the coastal buses to Menton etc and Cannes are now 1euro each way) but found the 'barque bleue' pretentious and enjoyed the local Nicoise meal in the 'Le Saleya' , a brasserie by the market much more to our taste. For 16.50 euros we had 3 courses.
It's worth going to the Italian border town of Veintimiglia on the train on Fridays (with the rest of the French population) for the flea market, if you like a bargain.
The much recommended, Fennochio icecream parlour was closed for the winter but reopens 1st March, but watch out, because its imitator Pinocchio is opposite! The old town square where it is located was very difficult to find, but it can be accessed from the market, which is open every day for the morning and was well worth visiting for all kinds of food (except Monday when it is antiques).
