The Star Hotel is an excellent value in expensive Nice, but it is not a place for people who place comfort and style above convenience and economy.
For 55 euros in low season, we were lodged in a tiny room with a serviceable bathroom. The room was made cheerful by large french doors that opened on to a little balcony over the street. It had all the basic amenities: TV, telephone, hair dryer and so on. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very clean.
The location is excellent; about a five to ten minute walk from almost anywhere you'd want to go in Nice.
The staff at this hotel are great. The two men who run the place are friendly and very funny (especially if you can speak some French), and as helpful as can be. The front desk closes at 10 pm, but they give you a code to let yourself into the building. The breakfast room is fine, and the breakfast is a fairly standard value.
Now for negatives. Don't expect anything attractive (the rooms can only be described as hideous) or any kind of soundproofing. We awoke at 7 each morning to the incredible sounds (hacking, coughing, snorting, etc) of the man in the next room. You'll hear every toilet flushed in the building and plenty of sounds from the street. The rooms have the standard peeling paint and battered furniture, and the shower had more than an acceptable quanitity of mildew. The hallway and carpet stairs are simply filthy--like they've never been cleaned. One morning, the power on our floor went out when a guest plugged in a travel iron.
On the whole, the Star is a great value, but if you can spend another 15 euros for something a bit more upscale, it's probably worth it.
