First let me say, this is a scary neighborhood at night, felt like French version of Harlem. Daytime, its actually not bad at all, and yes i will say that it is convenient to have the train station and tourist information office so close to the hotel. So if you happen to be cavorting to Cannes or Monaco and get back late to Nice, its nice to know you can walk to hotel so near when you get back. Other than the fact that the hotel is quite close (5-10 minutes walk) to the famous Russian Orthodox church in one direction and the Marc Chagall Biblical Museum in another, most other sites in Nice are away from this part of town. you can walk to old town nice and the promenade/beach but will take at least 20 minutes through an ugly part of town undergoing heavy construction, not a pretty walk at all.
The hotel itself... the staff are friendly enough and can speak english and seem to care. Management will probably claim its quaint and charming, but depending on how you look at it, it could translate to small and old. A little bit of a smell that you don't notice after a bit and the bed is a little old and creaky as is the carpet. I won't nitpick about everything bc it is something you can live with, for goodness sake. there is a tiny safe and a comfortably old sofa but the breakfast is pretty bad. Both Medicis Hotel and the Choiseul Hotel must contract with the Sunfish Cafe, which sits in between the two. A cold breakfast, with same menu every day: Cold croissants, cold ham, one cheese. On the side, you have some cornflake cereal, milk, plain yogurt, and OJ, some jams/spreads. Can't get too much more basic, not much variety or taste. The waitresses are nice though for French.
Overall, a hotel whose staff tries hard to make up for the fact that it is a little old and run down and in a not so nice part of town. It would definitely have been a much worse experience if not for the staff, which made it a passably ok experience.
