We booked all the hotels for our recent trip to Europe based on TA recommendations. The Massenet was the only one I was unsure about going in.....the reviews were positive, but the property looked run down from the available pictures. Turns out the pics do not do it justice and our fellow TA'ers did not fail us. It is brighter, more modern, cleaner and nicer than I expected. The room we had was by far the largest of any place we stayed the entire trip. Definitely on the minimal side as far as furnishings, but the carpet and paint look recent and the bathroom was bright and spotless. The bed was comfortable and we never heard anything from the adjacent rooms. The breakfast is skimpy....probably not worth the 8 Euros extra except for the convenience. All the people we dealt with at the front desk were great.
The real advantage of the Massenet is location: although there is no view, it's a block from the beach and just off the pedestrian mall loaded with shops, restaurants and bars. For most people, the hotel is probably too far to walk to from the train station with luggage; cab was about 15 Euros. However, we did walk to and from the station for a day trip to Monaco (highly recommended and only 6 Euro round trip), and it was interesting to see what Nice looks like away from the beaches (about 25 minute walk from hotel).
The Massenet is not a luxury hotel and isn't trying to be one, but it's a good value considering the ideal location and quality of the rooms. I would stay there again and can definitely recommend it.
