In all fairness, I only got as far as the lobby and that was enough. I booked the hotel for it's inexpensive rates and great location and it does have both of those things. However, I was unwilling to overlook the peeling paint, the ripped couch partially covered with a torn and faded blanket, the fabric draped ceiling that was moldy and the pervasive odor plus the fact that there is no elevator and it was next door to a very active "biker bar" and I don't mean scooters. I managed, with the not so helpful help of the desk person at Villa La Tour, to reserve another room at The Hotel Campanile (a European hotel chain) just 2 blocks away and with the same inexpensive room rates. I was also required, as a cancellation penalty,to pay for a one night stay at Villa La Tour. So beware. If "the Old Town" and inexpensive is what you are looking for but you would like to rest your head on a clean pillow, head for Hotel Campanile and stay far away from Villa La Tour

We stayed at Villa LaTour for 3 nights. It's as others have said - not a four star by any means, but very clean and what a great location. The staff is very helpful (particularly the gentleman who spent a long time helping us to get our rental car situation settled!) The room was small but who cares? I hope to return to Nice and I'd return to Villa LaTour for sure.

We loved Hotel la Tour. It is one of the only hotels in Vieux Nice (the car-free pedestrian area with historic buildings and cobblestone streets) It's a 10 minute walk to the beach and right near the regional bus station - very convenient for day trips.

The owner is extremely nice and helpful (great restaurant suggestion for a special birthday dinner) and definitley tried her best to make sure our stay was good.

Our room was the inexpensive interior room with a window over a courtyard. The room was miniscule - not for some people but we are used to hostelling and budget hotels, and for the price it's what we expected. We spent almost no time in the room so the size wasnt' a problem. You should note, though, that even this budget room had good adjustable air conditioning - unusual for this type of room in europe.

There was a great rooftop terrace where we had a picnic breakfast every day (get fruit from market, hit the bakery and get yogurts from the grocery store which is like a block away).

For the price, being able to stay in such a good location in Nice was worth the small room. If you can afford the larger room, that's really ideal. This is a great area of Nice that is relaxing and tourist friendly while still having local flavor (lines outside the butcher on the next block remind you real French people live here - not like some places in Paris where it's all tourists)

I strongly recommend Villa La Tour and we will be coming back.

“A pleasant boutique hotel in the old town area of Nice”

I stayed at this hotel for 6 nights while attending a conference at the Nice Acropolis (convention centre). It's a very pleasant hotel located in a highly atmospheric area. The staff were excellent, fluent in English and very helpful. The room was very clean with interesting decor. The bath room was also very good. Breakfast cost 7.5 euros and was fine with boiled eggs, cereal, salami, cheese and the usual bread and pastries but I got tired of the same thing after a few days. Like many small hotels in France, the decor in the public areas was eccentricly overdone with the walls muralized and with other interesting touches -for example the breakfast buffet table was set on the exterior vestibule that is the table was just outside the front door although the eating area was in the lobby. Presumably, this works better when one can eat at the tables outside. The hotel location was excellent being just inside the old town which I could wander through down to the flower market (Selya) and sea coast. It was a few steps from Garibaldi Square with the tram line running near by. The fact that the square was all torn up was really not a problem in terms of noise (I was told they had discovered ancient ruins beneath it which eventually will become a public attraction) . The hotel is just a 100 yards or so from the central bus station (Gare Routiere) and so don't take a cab from the airport (outrageously expensive at 36 euros for a relatively short ride) but rather take the 98 bus directly from the airport terminals to the bus station for only 4 euros. There's also a McDonalds just beside the bus station if you get tired of the local restaurants. The hotel is also only a five minute walk from the convention centre. I highly recommend this hotel especially if you are attending a conference.

I stayed at this hotel as part of my honeymoon in September of this year. Having done a lot of research beforehand, I knew what to expect. However, after actually experiencing the hotel, I will offer some comments for anyone still considering a stay there:

LOCATION: In the old town, surrounded by markets. 10-15 min walk to beach. Area makes you feel more like a local rather than a tourist. During the day, lots going on...at night, all the stores close down and it is very quiet. You will have to move closer to the beach where things will still be open. Hotel is 5 min walk to bus station which comes in handy because you will likely want to take the bus to surrounding towns. I highly reccomend going to Villefranche.

SIZE OF HOTEL: Very small, narrow staircase, no elevator. Rooms are small, but comfortable. Bathroom could be slightly bigger, but was fine.

FOOD AT HOTEL: We did not eat breakfast here. Being in the old town surrounded by markets, why not go for a stroll and get something from one of the locals?

STAFF: Very friendly, very informative. All the reviews are true, the staff here is one of a kind.
