We booked a room at Faubourg Montmartre via Hostelbookers[--] and at the time the reviews on the web site seemed to be ok.
However, it failed to live up to our expectations. Here is a summary of our experience:
> Our so called private room was the only thoroughfare to another group's room (so we got woken up during the middle of the night when they arrived home)
> There is no security - in addition to having another group staying in the ajoining room we were unable to lock our room and came home more than once to random people in our room. When we asked the "Pink Lady" where to put our valuables she said she would put them in her fridge for us
> Our private bath room was not private at all and occupants of other rooms came into our room to use it
> The room and bathroom were extremely dirty
> We were all bitten by bed bugs who, based on the graffiti in the rooms, appear to be long term occupants
> There were cockroaches in our room (which we also saw in the resturant down stairs run by the same people)
> At one stage we thought we saw bugs jumping on the top bunk - on closer inspection it was drops from the ceiling which was leaking. When we told the Pink Lady she explained it as the swedes upstairs having a shower and did nothing further. We consider that we were lucky not to have our video camera or computer on the bunk at that time
> On our last night the Pink Lady turned the water off in our room as it was leaking to the level below, and we were told to use the bathrooms in other rooms. It is the first time I have ever preferred to use a public toilet over the one where I am staying
> The Pink Lady does not speak any English so any concerns you have with the above cannot be easily communicated to her (note we had a french speaker with us and still we consider our concerns were not addressed at all)
We appreciate that the above may not bother some people, but we would have liked to have been informed of the above conditions before we booked to stay there.
We have been travelling for one month through France, Spain and Portugal and this is by far the worst hostel we have stayed in.
