I booked a room for 3 people by email & by phone, receiving a confirmation, so I was not pleased when we arrived and were told we had a room for 2. The owner quickly assured me that it wasn't a problem, but we were disappointed when we saw that the third bed was a sofa bed in the sitting area below an open loft. For two people the room would have been fine, but it was inconvenient for three. Each night the "bed" had to be made up by the staff, and it basically was just a mattress on the floor - very uncomfortable. I chose this hotel because it is part of the Romantik chain of special hotels, and we've stayed at many of them. While it is in a lovely setting and the grounds are very nice, the parking does not easily accommodate all the guests. There is literally one tight space per room, and with our van, it was a feat each night to get it parked if you came in after 9 p.m.
On the night before we were to leave, I went in to pay the bill to find that I was being charged more than my confirmation quoted - owing to the fact that whoever took my booking made a mistake - again the TWO people issue came up & they were charging me an additional 31 Euros a night for the third person. I argued with the clerk, asking to see the manager, while my husband went to the room to find that the "bed" had not been made up that night. It was a Sunday night & the befuddled clerk kept insisting I pay. Finally, he woke the owners, who came down to straighten things out. Mostly due to the fact that the bed was unmade, there was no argument & I was not charged the extra amount.
Because both hotels had only one room available when I made reservations, I booked a room for 3 for my brother-in-law & his family up the road at Le Hameau, where we spent more time, so we were able to compare. If we return to St. Paul de Vence, I would prefer Le Hameau. The price is better, it is closer to the hilltop village, the parking is spacious, the grounds are beautiful, their room was lovely with two separate bedrooms, & the owner even sent a fax with a photo of the room they were getting. They loved every aspect of the hotel.
