After the heady rush of the Aiguille du Midi, this lovely little rack railway was a treat. Best to buy a multipass if doing more than one ride. Pleasant little station in Chamonix, with very efficient and fast ticketing. The bright red trains are lovely old-fashioned basic carriages with wooden seats and pull-down windows.
The train itself slowly climbs up from the valley to Montenvers, passing over viaducts and through tunnels. At Montenvers itself, there are views of the glacier and a cable car down to the glacier itself. Can't comment on the ice cave, as a bad knee meant that 300 steps down and back were out of the question.
Very interesting exhibition of photos from the building of the railway added to the pleasant nature of the Montenvers stop.
