“An excellent choice”

Hotel Les Grands Montets

13 Mar 2008

We stayed at Les Grands Montets for 5 nights and everything met my expectations. This is a lovely, rustic hotel with friendly staff and a great location. We paid a little bit extra for a mountain spirit room as these are the recently renovated rooms. breakfast was great and the reception staff made our bookings for local restaurants - we did not go in to Chamonix to eat in the evenings though if we had been staying longer than 5 nights we probably would have. The skiing was good though you have to use the bus to get to the various ski areas - that was the only down side. I imagine this hotel will be idyllic in the summer months too.

“A good 3* hotel”

Hotel Les Grands Montets

This hotel is fairly quiet and cosy and very well located just opposite the Grand Montets ski lift.

The rooms are very clean but overall, if you want to be picky then the paintwork could do with touching up and the bathrooms in some of the rooms are very 1970's and also quite small. Hairdryer in all bathrooms. No proper wardrobe in room just a large cupboard and no drawers.

There's a small, open-plan lounge and bar area with an open fire at night and also a snooker table and TV - no English TV channels though. Small gym - lovely indoor pool:sauna:steam room and an outside jacuzzi.

Breakfast was very good - a lot of choice - the usual ham; boiled eggs, croissants/breads, cheeses, etc - all of good quality.

As the hotel does not do an evening meal your only option is to walk up to the village (5 mins) or catch a bus into Chamonix (free with the Chamonix pass - 20 min. ride). We ate at La Flambee and Le Rusticana in Argentiere and the food was excellent. It is a very good idea to book a restaurant at least the night before as they do get very busy.

For ski school the Ecole Ski Francais has an office just underneath the cable car, opposite the hotel, and there are one or two ski hire shops around the bottom of the cable car area.

We also skied at Le Flegere and Le Tour which is probably better than Argentiere for green/blue runs. Transport to these ski areas is free on the Chamonix pass and the buses go very frequently from outside the bottom of the cable car.

There's good shopping in Chamonix if you have a non-skiing day!

We were travelling as a small group of 8 people. The hotel is fabulous for the price. This is relative to the high prices in this region. Extremely well located 5 mins to the buzz of bars and restaurants. Try The Office for friendly barmaids offering free shots! The skiing is amazing at Grand Montets and would not rush to ski over at Chamonix itself. Would definitely come back.

Some of the rooms might need an upgrade soon, especially the washrooms. But the beds are great, and the rooms are clean. The spa/tub/pool area is excellent, clean and very functional.

The hotel serves breakfast but no dinner. Some few restaurants 5 min walk away, or take the free shutle to downtown Chamonix for more choices.

I hope that we'll visit the hotel soon.

BTW. The hotel is located close (2 min walk) to the Grand Montet ski area, which is the best in Chamonix if you're a good skier.

“Skiers' retreat”

Hotel Les Grands Montets

We stayed there the week going into Christmas at the very start of the ski season. Thankfully the snow came early this time unlike last season. The hotel itself is in the village of Argentiere which is a good 15 minute bus ride from the town center of Chamonix. Bus rides to all the villages in the valley are free and come every 10-15 minutes. Taxi from Chamonix to Argentiere will cost about 30euros.

The hotel is well located just about 150 meters from the ski lift. The high street of Argentiere is about 500m from the hotel just across the stream.

Inside, the place exudes a very friendly and cosy atmosphere. The log fire that sits in the middle of the small lobby is a winner. Most of the staff speak english bar 1 or 2 but they are all extremely helpful. The hotel has great facilities including a wet room with a boot warming rack, sleds for the kids (free hire), a gym, sauna, 20m heated pool and an outdoor spa. It has a small bar and a dining area which is only open for breakfast which will offer a selection of cold meats, breads and cheeses. The hotel has a small lift which services the 4 floors. There is a single pc near the reception for internet access.

The room we had faced the lifts and thus a great view of the alps. There was a balcony with deck chairs which is perfect for a bit of star gazing late at night. The room itself was immaculately clean and spacious even for the two of us plus a 5yr old child. Furthermore the bathroom was a bit larger than most, modern and importantly clean. Two sets of towels are included per person as one is for use in the pool area.

There are quite a few restaurants on the high street in Argentiere and we mainly ate there. If you're not too knackered after the day's skiing I would recommend taking a 1km walk in the forest from the hotel to this gem of a restaurant called La Cremerie du Glacier. A local had told me about this place and it apparently makes the best fondue in the valley. After having tried it, I would have to agree with him. The walk in the forest at night was simply magical with my daughter in tow with the sled borrowed from the hotel.

This hotel deserves its high rating on and I would not hesitate to stay here again - but next time, I'll remember to bring my bathers along.
