“Great for the business traveler”

This hotel is located in the heart of Lyon and is very difficult to find. The streets are all one way and if you miss the hotel, you must circle around the block through traffic that is busy at all hours of the daytime. Avoiding pedestrians and taxi’s that drive somewhat chaotically is a challenge. Once you arrive, the hotel is like any other big name hotel. It seems more suited to the business traveler rather than the leisure traveler. The rooms are all the same, clean and stocked with standard hotel furniture. The breakfast was large and filling but service was very poor. If you must stay in Lyon, this would do but there might be more charming places to stay.

“Location and mybeds!”

Sofitel Lyon

This is a large modern building overlooking the river. The entrance is rather odd with an Egyptian/Greek affect and very dim public spaces and bars. The bedrooms are terrific with clean lines, crisp modern decor and unfussy. Excellent bathrooms with superb detailing. The beds are very good indeed, spacious and comfortable. They are known as mybeds and you can buy the whole deal if you want to! Breakfast was expensive at 26euros but served on the 8th floor with very clear views of the river. It was of a very high standard, fresh coffee ( often a weak spot in hotels) and genuinely fresh juice and fruit as well as the usual pastries and brunch type food. You can eat here at dinner, a one star Michelin restaurant called The Three Domes, and the food is wonderful with efficient friendly service. The room could do without the canned music though. There is a more modest brasserie on the ground floor but as Lyon has so many good places to eat, search further afield. La Tassee nearby is very good.
There is an underground carpark which is 22 euros a day, far too expensive but necessary.

“Chic and modern”

San Francisco

This hotel was very nice, with the nicest bathroom ever--huge teakwood shower stall with a bench and both handheld and overhead showerheads and natural light through a window into the bedroom. The decor was modern and chic. The bed was topped with a featherbed; if you're not used to them, it's not that comfortable (I prefer a firmer surface). The lights and window shades are operable from the bed, which was great, and the shade blocks out the light completely when drawn.

My main complaint with the room was that it was so small there wasn't even enough floor space to do situps or pushups, and the hotel does not have a gym. Since the food in Lyon is so good, I was hoping to exercise to work it off!

The lobby, bar and breakfast room are all great, and the location is also terrific--you can walk everywhere from the hotel.

You can't be too picky with a 4-star hotel. It just has to be good, and this stay at the Sofitel Lyon was just that. No negatives.

The location, on the banks of the Rhone and about 2 minutes' walk from the Place Bellecour can't be beaten.

The room is a typical Sofitel room, very comfortable bed... cloud-beds we call them, good-sized room with a large flat-screen TV, well appointed bathroom (perfectly sized bathtub if you follow), enough towels, bathrobes, toiletries, etc.

Service is what made this so good, though. Check in... quick and efficient, friendly but not too friendly, and they had all the details right.
The bar (8th floor, nice view over Lyon) was also good, but I didn't like my glass of champagne coming on a tray that looked like a tombstone marked with the name of the champagne on??? Good service, though.

We didn't try the restaurant.

Breakfast, was both good (the scrambled eggs were fresh) and the service, again, excellent.

Etc. etc. etc. it's not often we find nothing to criticise in a hotel, but this is one, well done, Sofitel.
