This hotel is conveniently located next to Lyon's main Part Dieu Train station and is close to the Airport shuttle buses which run from 5am. We booked this hotel because we were arriving into Part Dieu towards the end of our holiday and wanted to be close to the train station and to the bus stop. I, like another reviewer, would only recommend this hotel for these types of short visits and perhaps also for short business trips. The hotel is comfortable, but is well worn and is essentially like any other chain hotel.

The plus sides: the hotel has a lift (which in our experience is quite rare in french hotels!), air conditioning (ours didn't work very well tho), a great bathroom with a proper shower (again rare in the 2 star hotels we stayed in) and a good hairdryer, and tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel is also served by a great restaurant where you can get a nice buffet or a set menu for just 8 euros. The staff in both the hotel and restaurant are hard working and very helpful.

The downsides: our hotel room wasn't very clean and smelt badly of what my girlfriend described as 'wet dog'. I agree with another reviewer, the carpets should be replaced and the room wasn't as clean as it could be. I would also urge travellers to be cautious when walking to and from the hotel and train station late at night and early in the morning as there tends to be quite a few of the more shady Lyon inhabitants staggering about at these times. Just take care as you would around train stations here in the UK and probably the world over. In short, you could do worse, but there's probably better!

“Great for Train Travelers”

This is a fine 2-star hotel, reasonably clean and very corporate. Front desk staff seemed nice. This hotel is a great choice for train travelers, especially those with an early morning train to catch, as it's right across from the Lyon Part-Dieu station. I probably wouldn't choose this hotel (no character) unless you have a tight train connection (as we did) but in that case, it's a great choice. We booked this hotel through hoteltravel.com and got a good deal with no hassle (60 Euros).

This is a 2 star hotel in France, it was exactly what I expected for the money.
It's got small rooms, minimal (but decent) service and is near the train station and the shopping centre.
The hotel looks nice from the outside but inside needs modernising. It's clean enough, the bathroom was fairly large for a 2 star and the lift didn't scare me.
The receptionist was fine until I refused to give my mobile number-then she went a little snotty.
Also there was a "taxe de sejour" which I have never had to pay before, but I'm unsure if this is a regional thing rather than due to the hotel.
The shopping centre (La Part Dieu) is not open on Sundays-for those of you who are used to Paris shops being open.
I personally didn't feel 100% safe in the area between the train station and La Part Dieu, there were lots of dodgy types hanging around, but I think that's pretty normal. Watch your bags, watch your wallet etc.
FYI- the local cuisine is based around the premise that every part of a pig is edible. Vegetarians avoid any restaurant with the word "Bouchon" anywhere on it.

All in all, I agree with the other traveller who said that it's fine for a business trip, or if you are the backpacker type, but don't stay there on a romantic break. Try for somewhere on the older side of town, which is really pretty and closer to the shopping street and the bars and restaurants.

Sorry, I don't see what the big deal is. The staff were very friendly if you spoke French to them. The rooms were huge by European standards and for a 2 star the bathroom was great! Our room had just been painted and was very quite. We were only in Lyon for a couple of days so the proximity to the train station made it even better. In fact I am going to book this hotel again for my next trip to Lyon in June and would recommend it to anyone staying a night or two.

I stayed at the Campanile for just one night (2 would have been my death!) in November with a friend.
The location is great, the hotel looks nice from the outside but inside...my oh my!
The staff is like robots. They tell you what you should know with ready made sentences, no smile, no friendliness.
The room is simply HORRIBLE! It looks like a room from the worst motel on a desert road. The pillows are very cheap quality, the sheets are badly tucked under the mattress, the blanket and the bed spread are filthy and cheap quality as well.
The carpet in the room should have been changed years ago. Don't take your shoes off if you don't want to get athlete's foot!
The bathroom is just clean enough and the towels show years of usage. Don't count on having fluffy towels because they are the worst towels you can get!

To sum up everything, it is a big NO NO!!!! Unless you are on a budget and you don't care about hygiene and a minimal comfort!!!
