The hotel Campanile Lyon Centre Perrache on first glance looked pretty good, though the building next to it is falling down and we were not pleased about the seedy street across the park. However, it is right next to the Lyon train station, beside a lovely park, a block from a great shopping area and convenient walking distance from lots of tourist destinations, assuming you don't take the train to them.
The staff was nice, spoke English reasonably well. However, the only elevator was barely big enough for two people without their luggage and was excruciatingly slow. The hotel was very hot, poor air circulation. Rooms and hallways followed no logical sequence and our room was very small and up another half-flight of stairs...no elevator convenience and difficult for someone with a bum knee to negotiate with luggage. Housekeeping was fine, bathrooms clean. Our window opened onto the building back walls around us, a lovely view of the wind-blown garbage, drying lingerie of the neighbors and molding wood scraps, but it was quiet, which was good, considering we arrived during the Jazz Festival.
Big market on the weekend. Good shopping and decent food all around, with small groceries and a cyber cafe within a block of the hotel, ATMs and banks within a block. Very easy to get around the area on the trains/Metro next door, several close by Metro stations, as well. Area closes down relatively early at night, so have something to do in the later evening, if you are a night owl. Never had a chance to try the morning breakfast at the hotel...too busy a-touristing!
