We booked this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews and feedback directly from a Lyon local who provides all kinds of guidance on this site. The room was lovely. Our first night was booked separately via Orbitz, which doesn't describe the room, so we didn't know what we were getting. It was the mid-sized Balcon, which was very nice, but not the larger Corbeille we had booked via Expedia for the next two nights. (We were unable to book all 3 nights on either of the website. Go figure!) The Corbeille was lovely, with a king-sized bed (yes! in France!), a twin (where our bags "slept"), a desk and a small dining table, as well as a huge bathroom. The room was very quiet, off the street. Hotel staff moved our bags to the new room while we were out. Service all around was gracious. The location was ideal for us. It is a block from the Rhone, making it an easy walk to the morning market and across to Vieux Lyon, and is also close to Place Terreaux, where there are wonderful restaurants, including Michelin 2-starred Leon de Lyon. Fabulous! We would definitely book here again upon returning to Lyon.

Top tip – ask for a room that does not face the street. I can usually sleep through anything but the street noise woke even me up. Our room was small – just enough space to walk round the bed - but clean and freshly / attractively decorated with a fully functioning shower-room.

The big downside was breakfast – the hotel just didn’t seem able to cope with the throughput of guests. No croissants, no fruit, no bowls for cereal, instant coffee – a real disaster zone. There are plenty of cafes in Lyon that will serve you better.

The hotel has a good position – you can walk to all the major sights in one busy day. Very near to the hotel is Café des Fédérations, an excellent brasserie with local food and helpful service.

The reviews of this hotel are absolutely right. It is convenient, clean and well furnished. our room a ' corbeille' was good size but at 120 euros per night not cheap. Equipment levels are good as is the finish and decor. It is in an excellent location and the staff are very helpful.

However, big problem is that the whole hotel is airconditioned -EXCEPT FOR THE ROOMS!! How bizarre is that. In July we entered a delightfully cool lobby and made our way to the room which was like an oven. A fan was provided which moved the hot air about but otherwise it was bad. Only answer at night was to have the windows wide open and, although it is a quiet street as they go the noise of the city and the 0545 bin truck was awful. We were told that technical difficulties meant that they could not AC the rooms . What rubbish!!

Bottom line is that it is a good 3 * hotel if a little on the pricey side fine in winter- but DO NOT GO IN HIGH SUMMER!!!!

The Grand Hotel des Terreaux was incredibly clean and they have nice fluffy bathrobes and slippers in the rooms. The rooms were decorated in a very traditional, frilly sort of way but nice, warm and inviting at the same time. The staff was helpful and friendly. The breakfast is not free, even though a buffet was out and seemingly included (I guess I did not read the fine print!) The pool on the ground floor is a nice addition!
