Stayed at Hotel Maria in late May 2012 as part of a 2-night stay in Munich and found the hotel to be rather average and in line with reviews on this site already.
We booked the night before, in a last minute online search, on hotwire.com. Of course, the hotel name was hidden until we had paid. It was described as a 3-star city centre hotel, meant to be £215 for 2 nights, however the Hotwire Rate was £110. It seemed a good saving, and we wanted to base ourselves as close to the city as possible.
We arrived around 7pm and Munich, and as I speak German, asked around to check where exactly the hotel was. Most of the locals had never heard of it but knew the street it was on. We found the street, just off Hauptbahnhof. The hotel, however, was at the opposite end to the street at number 112 so it was a good 15 minute walk from central station. Not quite what I would describe as city centre. Along our walk to the hotel was numerous lap dancing bars and take-aways which aren't in keeping with historic Munich and Marienplatz.
We arrived at the hotel and it seemed the staff weren't too pleased to see us. Unlike my other reviews, where I mention how welcoming and polite the staff are, the staff at Hotel Maria clearly wish they were somewhere else (as do most of the guests I presume). Our room was on the 3rd floor, so we took the rather ageing lift. The corridor at room 4 is simple poured concrete. I hope they're planning on putting a carpet down at some point. It's also very poorly lit so I wouldn't recommend Hotel Maria for those looking for comfort and security. There was also sockets and light fittings hanging out of the wall - a bit of a health hazard in my eyes, and could be potentially dangerous to those travelling with children.
Inside the room was a real surprise. It was modern and comfortable with a large TV and clean but small WC. Remember to pack your own toiletries as those supplied at Hotel Maria consist of a few sachets of 'all in one' body/hair wash. The view from our room looked out onto an adjacent building which had entered a state of disrepair.
Breakfast was a self-service buffet. It certainly wasn't on par with other hotels I've visited, but the traditional continental breakfast in Europe is never anything spectacular. Some nice German foods are offered which are good to try when in Bavaria.
U-Bahn station Theresienwiese is about 8 minutes walk from the hotel, with Hackerbrucke the same distance in the opposite directions. These connect you to all the places you need to go around Munich, so your feet shouldn't get too sore. Take care when leaving Theresienwiese station at night as the street are poorly lit, and this area isn't the most developed in town.
