It makes a lot of sense to stay outside the center city and use public transit to get around. The Comfort Hotel is a hundred meters from the S-Bahn station (trains every 20 minutes). A weekly pass in the inner zone costs E14, to all zones E38. The Comfort Hotel cost a bit more than half the price of the Holiday Inn, the official hotel of my conference.
Unterfoehring is a small suburb, with only a few pubs and restaurants (the hotel's own pub-restaurant is just fine). The hotel is five minutes walk from the river Isar, with continuous parkland, and there's open country with rec trails in the other direction, as well.
Friendly staff, good breakfast with a wide variety of hot and cold selections. We went down an hour early one morning, and although not all selections were available at that hour, the staff didn't growl at us for breaking the rules.
Quiet rooms, sparse but clean. Not a place to spend a lot of time, but then, who wants to spend vacation time in a hotel room, anyway?
Only complaint was that internet access was only available in the lobby. They said they are working on wireless access, but didn't say when it would be in operation.
