Nest Apartments gave us a chance to feel like we lived in Prenzlaurberg like locals. This was a far more satisfying way to stay in a city than a chain brand hotel. Our apartment had a very nice 70s chic feel. The furnishings were tasteful, somewhat retro, harking back i am guessing to the pre unification days. The kitchen with its radio was very reminiscent of the East. The location is rich with recent history with Bernaurstrasse just nearby. The hosts filled us in on the local history and places to check out. A little touch - the coffee in the apartment was superb.
The building is quiet and convenient (though we were there while a bit of restoration work was being done) and the location very easy to get to with trams to U and S stations right outside. Berlin public transport is excellent and getting around a breeze. The district is alive with young couples pushing strollers, cafes, clothing stores, nice restaurants, students on bikes, local shops, grafitti....just very alive and interesting.
We really lucked out finding this place and would recommend it highly if you're after something that's not a standard hotel experience, and you're a bit interested in seeing an authentic, vital side of Berlin ( perhaps a little 'alternative' for want of a better term). It reminded me very much of similar areas I've lived in in Sydney, more like the inner city than a classy deluxe suburb.
Make sure you visit Bernaurstrasse Wall Museum and stroll around the remaining wall sections, it's fascinating.
