Loved this hotel. Ideal location within walking distance of many sights, good shopping and a wide selection of restaurants/cafes. Not a particularly impressive facade but once you're across the threshold it's really beautiful. It has a different ambiance from other five star properties: whilst the decor is grand and immaculate the tone is one of restrained, discreet, understated elegance and luxury, without being stuffy. It avoids the formulaic in-your-face-blingy corporate five star approach and maintains a very individual, independent feel, oozing class. That makes it one of my all time favourite hotels.
The service is excellent but unobtrusive - if you like obsequious, omnipresent staff pandering to your every need you won't find them here. They're there when you need them (an ice pack for our daughter who tripped and fell in the room was swiftly delivered, and the iPad left behind located quickly and returned by mail!) and they're helpful and knowledgable, but they don't intrude. It is obviously a very well managed and run operation but in the interests of balance I would say that some of the staff could perhaps do with being a little warmer.
Our rooms - a deluxe suite interconnecting with a deluxe king on a corner of the sixth floor with great views of the Gendarmenmarkt - were wonderful, and huge. The decor is classically elegant, the furniture good quality and everything is beautifully maintained. Spacious bathrooms with lovely Occitane products. Expansive living room with sitting and dining areas. One minor disappointment was the paucity of treats in the rooms. They don't cost a great deal but they do make a disproportionate difference in terms of making you feel valued and pampered. Our children had a chocolate lolly on the first night but nothing on the other two nights, and my husband and I received some chocolates on the first night, nothing on the second and one peach and two small chocolates on a large plate on the third! A minor criticism but still room for improvement.
Breakfast in the restaurant (also the location of the wonderful Fischers Fritz where we enjoyed an outstanding dinner) was excellent - cold meats, cheeses and bakery items brought to your table with freshly squeezed juice, tea and coffee. Extensive buffet and some delicious dishes to order, especially the eggs benedict! Service is superb.
Overall a great stay and we very much look forward to returning!
