The reviews for the Alster Hof are really good on this website - they were the reason we booked it ultimatley. We enjoyed Hamburg, it was more than we expected and would recommend it to anyone. However I want to express some disappointment with The Alster Hof - but only a little...

Goods...
The location is perfect. On the lakes, 5 minutes from some of the best shopping in Europe and near enough but far enough from the infamous Reeperbam.
The breakfast buffet is as good as I've ever eaten. OK if you like your fries its not for you, but if you love freash fruit, yogurts, juices, great breads, cold meats and cheeses, then its a dream come true. I had to be roleld outta there!
Its a family hotel and as such is clean and well maintained.

Bads...
It feels like 1950 inside the hotel. But tacky rather than glamourous.
The room was meant to be a double, but instead the beds were pushed together and uncomfortably so. Just 2 crappy pillows too and no spares. And the not surprising absence of tea of coffee facilities always annoys me!
The TV is small but theres a great desk to make up for it. Look I'm not annoyed but I thought based on the reviews and the price (170 euro per night) we'd be getting something a bit less run of the mill.
The staff were also average. An unfriendly welcome and little of no interraction with us non german speakers after that. But the guy with the 1980s haircut is class - pure Hasslehoff!

“A Good Base for Exploring Hamburg”

We stayed at the Alster Hof for five nights during the Football World Cup last June. The hotel is clean, the location is fabulous (half a block from Binnenalster and another block to the City Hall), and the room we had was functional. This is not a luxury hotel by any means (for that, the Vier Jahreszeiten is a block away), but it is a terrific value for money.

  • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — The city tour bus stop is right outside the hotel door. Use some money you save here to treat yourself to afternoon tea at the Vier Jahreszeiten!

We were very pleased with the location of this hotel - close to the Alster Lake, the centre of the city and near two Underground stations. The hotel itself was very comfortable with a very good varied breakfast. The lack of AC in very hot weather whilst we were there was the one thing that we missed but this is an inexpensive hotel considering its location.

Stayed here a couple of weeks ago and it was very pleasant.
The staff were friendly and the room had all that you need.
Missed the breakfast due to the Hofbrauhaus next door which is well worth a visit.
Reasonably priced, set right on the lakes and in walking distance of the Rathaus.

Near station. Nice rooms. Good and varied breakfast. Close to Alster lakes. Very helpful staff. Very reasonable price - £128 double room for 2 nights.

Rooms were a bit warm in the night, but easily solved by opening a window.

Actually, everybody in Hamburg seemed very polite and friendly. We had a good time there.
