Coming as a tourist to my hometown Hamburg, I was looking for an affordable, quiet hotel in one of the nicer, central areas, not downtown (where everything is dead on weekends), not in the red light district, and definitely not near the airport or somewhere else in the boondocks.
I wanted to walk from our hotel through pretty, tree lined streets to interesting shops and good restaurants, in a lively urban area. In other words, our hotel had to be in one of the fashionable quarters around the Alster lake.
The small Boulevard Hotel was just what we were looking for, with just a 5-minute walk down to the beautiful Alster park, and up to the vibrant (half posh, half student) quarters around Gertigstrasse and Poelchaukamp with numerous shops, pubs, and small restaurants.
The hotel itself offers truly baroque hospitality. The friendliness of the staff, the cornucopia of a breakfast buffet - and the voluptuous furniture.
We also appreciated the free parking in front of the hotel (no small thing in this area!) and the free internet access in our room.
