This hotel is one of the best I have stayed at. The Staff is friendly and efficient and all speak English. The rooms are medium size, clean and very comfortable. The best thing about the hotel is the restaurant. The breakfast is superb. There are enough different dishes to have a different breakfast every morning for at least two weeks. The same room is also used for the evening meals. The Movenpick restaurant had theme nights on Thursday, Friday and Saturday while we were there. On Thursday it was American night (€16.50), Friday it was Italian night (€22.50) and on Saturday it was Swiss night (€22.50). It turned out to be excellent value because there is so much choice that it is impossible to leave the restaurant without having just what you wanted
It was brought home to us when we decided to go out on Saturday night to an Italian restaurant called Ristorante Italia. It was so nice inside that we thought – oh, this should be good. It was the most dreadful meal we (6 of us) have ever had. It was like Gordon Ramsey before he turns a restaurant around. I can just picture the kitchen cupboards full of packets of minestrone and jars of pasta sauce. When we arrived at 8:15 pm there was only one table occupied. When we left two hours later there was still only one other table occupied. The staff was sitting around a small table doing nothing. What does that tell you? This was Saturday night!! What a waste!! I wished we had stayed in the Movenpick for the Swiss night.
The bar was cosy but deliberately very dark, too dark but that did not spoil the enjoyment. Across from the hotel was the Radisson who did a happy hour (half price) for beer and wine between 4 and 6 pm.
We arrived in mid March and it was very cold but Lubeck is a nice compact town where the old sits with the new. There was lots of ice on the river but we managed to find a company who did boat tours for about €7 each.
I think it was unfair of one reviewer to complain that there was not a swimming pool. The hotel does not claim to have a swimming pool. A pool is listed on the hotel website in the Lubeck Leisure and Recreation facilities as 0.5 km distance, just as it lists Fishing as 20km and Squash Courts as 3km distance. I took a chance on the latest review and was not disappointed.
It was very noticeable that throughout the day people not staying at the hotel were either dining in the restaurant or drinking in the bar.
A taxi from the airport was €16. We actually got an MPV and it was still €16.
