I am returning this month for my third visit to the Hotel Stadt Luebeck, with a small group from my school. I am very surprised to see complaints from one or two other visitors - they seem to be people with an axe to grind. On each visit I have found the owner, Gerd Richert, to be friendly and helpful. He speaks good English and is quite anglophile - even happily allowing my pupils to interview him for their GCSE coursework ! He gladly offers advice about Luebeck for visitors.

The hotel is of good two-star standard and is excellent value for the prices charged. Its location is terrific: right across the road from the bus station, which has a regular service to the airport (but is quiet enough, by evening, not to be at all disturbing); round the corner from the rail station; and a straightforward 10/15-minute walk into the town centre. There is a row of shops, including cafes and a late-ish opening drug store, within two minutes.

Rooms are clean and comfortable, and everything works; I had a minor problem on my first visit when I was allocated a "smoker's" room, but Herr Richert happily and swiftly switched me to a non-smoking room. Breakfast was fine and the breakfast room is pleasantly furnished.

Luebeck itself is an excellent short-break destination (especially with Ryanair's generally low fares from London Stansted): it is a fine historic city with lots of lovely little side-streets, and the brash lights of Hamburg are only 40 minutes away by train.

As a pleasant, good-value base, I would recommend the Hotel Stadt Luebeck with total confidence.

Hotel Stadt is in a good location for budget, no-fuss travellers, who want a low-cost break in Luebeck, near Hamburg, Germany. It's just across the street from the bus station, from which a bus takes you directly to from the airport (without fuss or need to change) at modest cost. The railway station is just around the corner, from which you can easily reach several other different interesting German towns.

The hotel itself is modest and plain, but perfectly acceptable. My bedroom (& shower Wc) was small but clean, comfortable and cosy, and the bed was comfortable. TV was not satellite, just local German, but that's minor and not important. I missed the in-room electric kettle tea/coffee-making facilities which we take for granted in British hotels; but I don't know if that's standard practice in German hotels, or not. There is one small lift, and the breakfast room is in a bright and pleasant little "basement" room with attractive painted windows. Unfortunately, (my only "minus" point) the breakfast was entirely a modest "cold buffet" - no hot/cooked options were offered; and this made the breakfasts a little bit boring. No evening food is offered: evening meals have to be taken outside.

Still the manager and his assistant spoke very good English, and were very helpful in giving me information about Luebeck and other towns to visit for day-trips. It's a very pleasant walk from the hotel towards the famous Holstentor and the Puppenbrucke over the River Trave, although several buses can take you into the Old Town on the island.

This isn't a fancy hotel which you "live" in during the day; but it's an adequate, respectable & convenient lodging-place to return to at night.

“One of the worst in Lubeck”

Went for the weekend to visit the Christmas Market in Lubeck. The hotel was very old and extremely cold. Temperatures were below freezing during the night, yet the small radiator in the room did not seem to function at its fullest. Needless to say this was insufficient to heat an old room in an old house with very poor insulation. You could actually see the spiderwebs in the ceiling weave in the cold breeze coming in from the windows. The water in the shower also refused to be anything resembling hot!

Furthermore the receptionist/owner? seemed to suffer from some kind of illness resulting in frequent couching/spitting and very heavy breathing. I didn't wait around long enough to wait and see if he was in charge of making breakfast, as that would most likely have resulted and some kind of food poisoning.

A brief but very unpleasant stay of a single afternoon, as I refused to stay there overnight. The owner however refused to cancel my reservation of 3 nights, so I ended up paying for the room without actually occupying it. A small price to pay for avoiding some kind of infection from either the cold and damp room, the cold shower or the owner himself.

The truth to this interpretation is surely - that this guest was phoning the Hotel 12 0 clock in the night before the day of the arrivel to let us know that he would like to cancel the booking, because they have decided to go to Hamburg instead of staying in Lübeck. We explained to him that there is a excicting booking which we kept for him and according to the booking conditions
he would have to pay the cancelation fee. He then decided to fullfill his stay in Lübeck.

01 0 clock in the night the booking company phoned us to say that this guests have called them to inform us that the Guests have to cancel the booking because of illnes, but he told us before that he would rather go to Hamburg.

However the booking company informed him that he would still have to fullfill the booking conditions.

The interpretation that the Hotelroom was not heated is absoluty incorect. This Room has been occupied all the time before with other Guests every day and there were no coplaints at all.

The Windows in all Rooms are specialy doubleglased and soundproof.

The rest of their interpretation is not worth commenting on. The only reason was that the guest was using all his energy to find negative stories based on the facts that they had to fullfill the booking regulations.

The Hotel has for many years acoomodated manny satisfying guests. But we are extremely sorry, that in this case we have been confronted with such unfair interpretation.

This a budget 2 star hotel. Knowing that, it is not bad at all. It has a great location to the train station, right across the street. It is small but clean. We arrived a day earlier than we had reserved and Herr Gerd Richert, the manager, shuffled some rooms and accommodated us. He was also very helpful and spoke English. We asked him about a laundromat and he offered to do our laundry at no charge. The breakfast was also good. This is a good value for the price as long you remember that is a 2 star hotel.

“Beware when booking”

Beware when making a reservation at this hotel. We booked a double room for 3 nights by email. On arrival, we discovered that the room itself was overpriced for its outdated condition & stank of stale smoke. As there wasn't much to do in Lubeck we decided to stay with a friend in Hamburg for the final night. We notified the hotelier the night before we intended to check out. He insisted that we must pay for the full 3 nights despite not requesting any deposit, credit card or statement to this effect when booking/checking in. On offering to pay for half of the final day (despite leaving first thing in the morning after the 2nd night), he insisted that we pay in full or he would call the police. We listened to continuously changing stories about how this was the law in Germany. When the police arrived he backed down & accepted part payment, but tried to make us sign a form in German that we would pay the remaining balance at a later date. A hotel that we stayed at later on during our stay in Germany was most obliging and proved that the Lubeck hotelier was simply being unreasonable!

The truth about this statement is that this Lady confirmed again in her writing that she booked a Doubleroom for 3 Nights. For 2 Nights
the room was fine to her and she did not make any complains. Only when she cancelled the 3 night and was informed that she will have to pay the cancelation fee, she started to be very rude.
We tried to explain that a Hotelbooking is binding to both Hotel and Customer. She did not believe, and it was she herself who wanted to see the police. So we had the police for the first time in 25 Years. Needless to say that the police told her that they had no influence in the booking contract which we tried to explain to her before.
As we have a good reputation, thousand of Guest have been very satisfied with the Hotel and the friendly staff and keep returning every year. We are sorry to say that we could not satisfy this Guest. But the problem was caused by her.
