I am returning this month for my third visit to the Hotel Stadt Luebeck, with a small group from my school. I am very surprised to see complaints from one or two other visitors - they seem to be people with an axe to grind. On each visit I have found the owner, Gerd Richert, to be friendly and helpful. He speaks good English and is quite anglophile - even happily allowing my pupils to interview him for their GCSE coursework ! He gladly offers advice about Luebeck for visitors.
The hotel is of good two-star standard and is excellent value for the prices charged. Its location is terrific: right across the road from the bus station, which has a regular service to the airport (but is quiet enough, by evening, not to be at all disturbing); round the corner from the rail station; and a straightforward 10/15-minute walk into the town centre. There is a row of shops, including cafes and a late-ish opening drug store, within two minutes.
Rooms are clean and comfortable, and everything works; I had a minor problem on my first visit when I was allocated a "smoker's" room, but Herr Richert happily and swiftly switched me to a non-smoking room. Breakfast was fine and the breakfast room is pleasantly furnished.
Luebeck itself is an excellent short-break destination (especially with Ryanair's generally low fares from London Stansted): it is a fine historic city with lots of lovely little side-streets, and the brash lights of Hamburg are only 40 minutes away by train.
As a pleasant, good-value base, I would recommend the Hotel Stadt Luebeck with total confidence.
