“Good location, basic accommodation”

Hostal El Triunfo

20 Oct 2007

Excellent location just over the road from the cathedral and in the heart of the old town. Nice bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. Rooms pretty basic - we were in one of the roof -top rooms which was quite hot in October so I guess would be extremely hot in the summer. Good value but not luxury. Choose it for the location rather than the comfort.

The hostal's location can't be faulted, it's right next to the Mesquita and in the old town, yet still relatively easy to reach by car. The room itself wasn't huge, but was sufficient. There was only one small window, which overlooked a patio which seemed to have all of the airconditioning for the surrounding rooms on it, so it wasn't exactly spectacular. The TV had buttons missing, and when I enquired as to the whereabouts of the remote control, I was told I needed to leave a €10 deposit because people had been stealing them - which is one way of dealing with it I suppose. The parking was a godsend, although the people who direct you to it don't speak any English (it is Spain afterall) so be prepared for an interesting drive :) The rooms were quite noisy and not very soundproof but the noise was mainly due to the other people in the hotel rather than the surrounding area

Overall I had a pleasant experience at this Hostal. The excellent location makes it good value for money, even if anywhere else a few little hiccups would have been less easy to forgive: namely the small room with a tiny window and the fact that because it was busy, it took almost 30 minutes to check out. Originally we were given the wrong room, but the staff dealt with it quickly and with politeness. The hotel car park is a bonus, but it comes at extra cost (It's worth it anyway).

I went before Easter 2007 and stayed for 2 nights. I paid 80 Euros per night, although not particularly high for peak season but enough to expect clean and comfortable accomodation. The room is not small but not spacious as well. The room is clean but all the furnishings are old and have stains everywhere, I went to bed worrying that mouse may come out from one of small holes in the walls/ceilings. The TV does not work. We have only one window and it's opened to the indoor patio of the hotel restaurant where they have put a few tables to serve people, so it was extremely noisy in the morning when people have their breakfast and also at nights when people have dinners. I can hear people's footsteps in the corrdior from my room. There was a very strange smell in the room probably due too poor ventilation and the fact that the furnishings are very old. The bedsheets and pillow cases felt like plastic. The furnishing is without taste, it would be better if they do not have any decorations at all. The worst is the heating and AC, I woke up at night at around 2 because it was too hot in the room, and put the AC up but the room got hotter and hotter... I went to the frontdesk and they told us they switched the AC to central heating at the evening (and from then on only heating is available) without notice and it was the heating not the AC that was blowing directly to our faces from the AC on the ceiling. I asked them to switch it to AC but they said it's impossible, AC is only available from 3 am onwards, apparently from 3 am onwards the heating will change automatically to AC. It's impossible to sleep in such a big difference in temperature, it's like sleeping half of your night in Africa directly under the sun and sleeping the other half in North pole. The staff is ok, not too friendly or helpful but not hostile as well. Will never go back even if they give me the room for free. It's a torture.

We read some good reviews of this hotel on the internet and in our Let's Go book so we decided to check it out. Though it has a great location (right by the rear walls of the Mezquita) and is located in a historical neighborhood, the hotel and the rooms were a bit bland and lacked character. Our room was spacious though and the bathroom was clean. My complaints were the thin walls (we could tell what tv shows our neighbor was watching) and the state of the bed - our pillow and sheets were littered with hairs that weren't ours! Considering the rest of the room was clean, I don't know why they let the bed's condition slip. We also didn't enjoy the restaurant very much as everything that sounded tasty wasn't in stock. A five minute walk in any direction will get you an affordable and great meal. The staff was ok if a bit Fawlty-towers like - I actually saw the waiter hit the cook on the head after the cook told him he was too slow. All in all, nothing bad happened and the price and location and the view of the Guadalqivir river and Mezquita walls from the roof (tip: take a bottle of wine up there at night and enjoy the view!) made it a memorable stay.
