This place will exceed most people's expectations. A real sense of style, giving it a Radisson or Park Plaza sort of feel. OK so a close look reveals everything seems to have been built to a tight budget but that in itself has to be admired. It even achieved that 'no-one's ever had this room before' feel.
The room was very smart without being lavish. The multi-jet shower was great, the bed was large and very comfortable and the hi-tech window blackout creates a real risk of sleeping all morning. Mind you, with breakfast being served until midday that might not be a problem!
Only a real traditionalist could fail to be impressed by the Barcelo but sadly the stunning but permanently empty bar area is just too cool for its own good. But this hotel aims for fun design, not functional design: the slide from the first floor to the ground is one of many things that prevents it feeling too business-oriented.
The breakfast can compete with the likes of Marriott, very generous choice and even 'champagne'.
The location's extremely handy, right on top of the train station which links straight to the airport, and only ten minutes' walk from the most attractive parts of the city. Just be sure to jump out at 'Malaga RENFE' on arrival (not the next stop, 'Centro', which is the end of the line). Attached to the hotel is a modern shopping centre, very attractive as shopping centres go, and Avis car-hire is by the hotel's rear entrance.
For a few days in Malaga you could spend a lot more without doing better.
