“Mixed Opinions-Loved Torremolinos but not the hotel”

Hotel Griego Mar

16 Jul 2008

I have very mixed opinions about the Griego Mar so make sure you read this all the way through! Me and 2 of my closest friends booked a week at the Griego Mar, half board, in July for £250 which was an absolute bargain and we all agree that we are very easy to please and don't expect much from a hotel.

We do expect to be given a room and customer service, however!! Upon arrival at this hotel we were told that there was no room for us (despite having booked our holiday 4 months in advance) we were sent to another hotel overnight and told to come back the next morning at 10.

We turned up at 10 and the woman on reception told us we'd have to wait til 2pm for our room to be ready and that we'd only booked for 2 people (there were 3 of us) and we'd have to pay for the third person. To resolve this we had to call a hotline, premium rate phone line from our mobiles after the receptionist refused to let us borrow a phone. The people at the end of the hotline were very very helpful and got everything faxed to the hotel within minutes. The stuff they faxed was the confirmation we already had with us so we felt a bit like we weren't believed and also the staff really didn't care and left us sitting and waiting for ages.

Now the positive bit!!!! Our room was small but arguably one of the best in the hotel. We had a big balcony, overlooked the pool and could see the sea.

The food in the hotel was outstanding. The biggest buffet I've ever seen and with the biggest variety. There was lots of fresh veg and salad (which was refreshing as the days were very hot) and great meat dishes, vegetarian selections, pasta, kids food and deserts. We are spoilt for choice, it was brilliant. Anyone who says the food was poor is insane!!!

The hotel was well kept and always clean with maid service everyday. The pool was a bit small but there was so much to do in Torremolinos that it didn't bother us!

The location of the hotel, although set back from the beach was incredible. It took about 20 minutes to walk to the beach but we were grateful of this as it meant we discovered some great windy streets with amazing shops, cafes and bars. Griego Mar is only a 10 minute walk away from Aqualand as well which is the best waterpark I have ever been to (had the best day ever there!).

One problem we did have with the hotel was the lifts. We were on floor 6 and sometimes the lifts took about 5 minutes to come. We didn't let it bother us though and were often found jumping down the stairs.

The hotel's entertainment is awful. The entertainment team are very "in-your-face" and annoying and the one day we stayed around for the evening show, it turned out to be very provocative and stuffed with sexual innuendoes. It was something we would have expected to find on a 18-30's holiday, not in a family hotel.

Me and my friends had an absolutely wonderful holiday and wish we could've stayed longer. The hotel treated us badly but we didn't let that get us down as we're fairly easy going people anyway. I loved Torremolinos as it was very Spanish and pretty but I wouldn't go back to the Griego Mar. I'm not saying don't go here, I just think that if you've booked a cheap holiday you get what you pay for. If you've got a bit more money to spend on a holiday then look elsewhere. But go to Torremolinos, it's such a great place.

“Not three-star hotel - two star is generous”

Hotel Griego Mar

8 Jul 2008

I have just come back from a week at the Greigo Mar and what a dissapointment. This is the first time I have written a review but it was that bad I thought I had better warn others. The hotel is definitely not a three star and I would not visit this hotel ever again - even if it was free. The reception service was slow because of not enough staff. The communal toilets were a disgrace and not cleaned and a foul smell. The cleaners for the room were not much better - did not believe that residents should have basic things like toilet paper. We had a pool side view and the noise from the entertainment was bearable but the hotel guests seemed to think it was acceptable to make noises from 4.30am when they came back drunk.

The food was below average - do not pay all inclusive as it will be a complete waste of money. The menu for lunch is nothing special. The breakfast meal was below average, and the evening meal was not that much better.

The waiters for the restaurant did their job but there was no smiling or pleasant conversation. If you thanked them for clearing your empty plate they would just look at you with no expression.

We are just back from a 10 day stay at the Greigo Mar Hotel in Torremolinos. I have to admit, before going I was a little worried due to some of the reports but once we arrived my nerves quickly faded.
The (majority) of the staff are both polite and friendly and were quick to help if we needed directions or information on anything. The food was definitley not as bad as some previous reports say, yes the variety could have been a little better but the quality was brilliant.
The entertainment at night was average, although I thoroughly enjoyed the reptile show and the parrot show, after which it was possible to hold the snakes and parrots for pictures.
The beach was a very pleasant 15minute walk, i was dreading all the steps everyone seemed to mention but in fact they were not at all steep and due to the shops lining the road I barely noticed them at all!
As for bars around the hotel, I can really only recommend 1...not because the rest aren't worth a look but because once we found it we never went to any others! It was "The Bailey Bar" and was a short 5min walk from the hotel. Owned by the lovely Jerry and Karen from Northern Ireland, it serves the most delicious food you will ever find in spain! The bar staff immediatley make you feel welcome and are as helpful and friendly as you will find, even buying us a farewell drink on our last night!
As for things to do, I recommend the crocodile park which has spains answer to Steve Irwin, the dolphin park in benalmadena and the zoo in fuengirola, all of which were fantastic.
Overall I highly recommend the Greigo Mar and Torremolinos and would definitely go back!

“Well priced - Good Hotel”

Hotel Griego Mar

1 Jul 2008

My sister and I booked here for our first holiday away together. After reading reviews we were a little worried. We were extremely surprised. From Malaga Airport it is about 15/20 minute drive and we were charged 20 euro’s for taxi. Reception looks nice, staff could have given us a bit more info on what is where and meal times etc. Safe cost about 2 euro’s a day plus 20 euro deposit which you get back when you leave. Room very basic but ok. We were there for Euro final so very noisy with horns blowing etc but this was fun and who can blame them, great atmosphere. We were on 3rd floor facing awful flats but I would rather that than facing pool and all the noise from entertainment. The walk to beach was lovely and as soon as you are out of the hotel there are shops all the way to beach. Sun beds on beach cost 4.50 euro's each and are well worth it. Drinks in the centre are not cheap. It is lovely for people that don’t like busy clubbing areas and the people of Torremolinos and very friendly. I don’t think the bags and various gifts were that cheap. Hotel value for money - definitely. Food was fine and so much to choose from. Stay again - maybe, but so many others places to visit first. The hotel was clean and modern but would not fancy going during peak season. Go to the hotels shop for gifts as well priced and they wrap them for you!

“Pool area too small”

Hotel Griego Mar

29 Jun 2008

I had read some bad reviews about this hotel and was quite worried about going there but was pleasantly surprised. I had a lovely big room with free air con and the shower was great. Rooms were clean and had clean towels every day.

The food was not as bad as some people have written and there were at least 4 choices of main course every night and lots of choice for desert the only gripe i had about the dining room is that it is too noisy but thats to be expected with a lot of people all in one place.

the thing i hated about the hotel is that the pool area is simply not big enough for the amount of rooms. You had to be up at 7am to ensure you got a sunbed for the day, and even then you are squashed in like sardines as there is not enough space. For this reason i would not go back to the hotel again, but stick to self catering, but on the whole thought this was a good hotel to stay in but it is a long walk to the beach so be warned!!
