We visited for a week mid April, myself, my two daughters and a friend. We booked via easyjet holidays and paid less than £200 pp for a week, half board inc flights.
As mentioned in other reviews, the hotel is old and in need of updating, however it is clean and it's selling point is the location and value for money, on this alone I would rate it highly however the customer service has a long way to go and really let's this hotel down.
This hotel is popular with the Spanish, retired age range and huge groups of students on school trips. We got a strong sense that whilst the English were tolerated they were not liked by many of the staff and clientele. That said, some of the staff were exceptional and helped to redress the balance of their colleagues poor manners/hospitality.
Overall, we would not return to this hotel again as by the end of the week, we couldn't wait to get out of there and the british prejudice wore us down as the days passed. But to give a fair review, I have broken my review down to highlight the good and bad points.
Hotel - old and outdated but clean and for the price, good value. The pool area is great, well kept, pretty and peaceful (when the students were out anyway). But bear in mind there is no children's pool/play areas etc and in high season I think the number of sunbeds would be inadequate for hotels capacity.
Rooms - very basic and poorly maintained in terms of DIY (broken loose fitting plug sockets, air con unit stuffed in a hole in the wall complete with gaps and drafts! Loose and taped windows!) but very clean and thoroughly cleaned everyday, fresh towels, decent warm showers and comfy beds. Non pool view rooms will get no sun and catch the worst of the wind coming off the beach.
Entertainments/amenities - the entertainment is aimed at older clientele and spanish consisting mainly of ballroom dancing, flamenco and music. There is nothing at all for children( mine are teenagers now so this didn't matter but if you were thinking of going with younger children, there is absolutely nothing at all to cater for them, so beware).
Wifi is provided free but you have to get log in slips from reception, but is very unreliable and has a poor range. We couldn't get wifi in our room or on much of the pool area so had to sit in reception or the tv room to great online most of the time.
Food- the food cost us next to nothing in our booking (around an extra £20 pp hb for the week) so with this is mind we couldn't really complain. The food was edible but seriously lacked any variety and was very limited. In particular, there was a lack of fresh fruit at breakfast and decent salads at meal times.
Location - undoubtedly the best feature of the hotel. 15 minute car ride from the airport, benalamadena and it's harbour 10 minutes to the right and la carihuela and torremolinos 15 minutes to the left...all along the pedestrianised beach promenade. Absolutely beautiful part of the area, fairly quiet but In reach of everything. We have visited a great deal of the coast resorts along the costa del sol and this really is a little gem and well worth a visit.
Handy info and tips
19 euro for weeks safe hire (safe is not in room but old fashioned key safe in room near reception)
15 euro a week for fridge hire
22ish euro for cab to airport
For excellent value and choice of dining, walk left along beach promenade to the dining district of la carihuela (10 minutes)
Highly recommend the limon cafe (come out of beach gate, turn left and a few shops down) not much to look at but excellent cafe food, exceptionally good service and cheap prices ( meal deals for 4-5 euro inc drink). We went here everyday but one because it was closed and went to the big one next door that cost double, and tasted revolting!
Make sure you ask the reception for a key to the beach gate to get easy access from pool area(they don't give them out unless you ask).
Watch out for gate jumpers! My 13 year old went to the hotel toilet whilst we were sunbathing and run out petrified after a man jumped the fence, went into the ladies and started asking how old, where's her mum, shake my hand etc. I never let her go alone again. The hotel CCTV picked it up but he was already gone and the police weren't interested.
