We stayed at this property for one night in May. It was a great location - you could easily walk down from the Alhambra (I wouldn't walk up as it's all uphill - we found that catching the bus for 1 euro was a better option). Location was also easy for going downtown for shopping and food. Wonderful side streets and market.
We took cab from the train station. However, because the road going up to the Alhambra is closed, it was difficult for the taxi to reach the hotel without taking a long, circuitous (hence, expensive) route. So he dropped us at the bottom of the hill and we had to walk up about 45 - 50 yards. Easily doable, but the taxi driver seemed concerned. Cost was about 6.5 euros.
We had reserved an interior room, and were upgraded to a room overlooking the Albayzin - it was on the third floor and had several windows. Once you figured the air conditioning aparatus out, it easily cooled the room. The rooms was snug, but fit two single beds, a good sized closet and two chairs which we faced each other to provide space for the second suitcase. Bathroom was small, but efficient - lots of hot water, good pressure and comfortable shower. Beds were very comfortable - and welcome after hours of walking.
We paid 83 euros for our room - w/o breakfast. It had an elevator (good news) and free internet (great news). We didn't eat breakfast on site as it was a better value to eat at a local cafe. The staff was quick to recommend restaurants, and happy to assist in storing our luggage, etc.
Upon arrival in Granada, we hurried to take a walking tour recommended by Rick Steves. The guide was at the main square as promised, but lacked any kind of enthusiasm for the city...or willingness to go beyond the very basic for the participants. It was a good route, but Maria was clearly doing the tour in her sleep. A shame as there is so much to see!
The hotel also efficiently arranged our reservation for the visit to the Alhambra. You should really do this in advance. They made the arrangement, and we simply showed up the morning of our visit to pick up the ticket. Thus, we waited in a line of three people instead of the 75 to 100 already assembled by 8 am! It might cost 1 euro per person more for this service, but RESERVE IN ADVANCE. On the day we visited, the people in line at 10 am (still more than 100) were told that the Palaces of the Alhambra were already sold out for the day!
Would definitely recommend the Puerta de las Granadas....and take them up on their dining and touring suggestions as well!
