This was my 'inaugural' stay in a Melia hotel and it was a fantastic first impression. My husband and I booked three nights here as part of a driving tour through Andalucia -- and we booked through a travel auction web site so we got a fantastic rate too. We half expected to be put into a tiny, windowless room for the price we paid, but we were very pleasantly surprised to stay in a city view room, which had beautiful views across to the Seville cathedral.
The hotel is located on a tiny street (we had fun finding it with our SatNav) in the middle of Seville, and there are lots of restaurants, coffee shops and bars nearby. The valet staff were efficient, friendly and speedy as soon as we pulled up. We were escorted upstairs to the lobby, where we were greeted by a crisp glass of Cava and simply wonderful front desk staff. I have to disagree with other reviews expressing discomfort with the staff 'hand on heart' gestures. We certainly saw a couple of them do this, but it wasn't odd or over the top at all.
Our room was, in a nutshell: amazing. Huge and clean with modern decor and fantastic in-room electronics and lighting (we didn't think they were that difficult to work out, but there are a lot of buttons so if you're a bit techno-phobic it might seem daunting). The bathroom was awesome, with separate loo and shower area. The bed was super comfortable and this hotel actually had fluffy, firm and soft pillows (unlike so many we've stayed at with flat pillows). It was quiet save for the romantic sounds of the churchbells so we slept brilliantly.
We had one niggle throughout our stay and that was that the room wasn't as clean as we might have expected for a 5-star hotel. For example, there was some noticeable, caked-on dust all over the very ornate mirror frames in the bathrooms fingerprint/streak marks in the sinks. Having said that, the elaborate decor and black marble countertops would be a challenge to anyone trying to keep it clean so it wasn't a huge deal. Otherwise the most important parts of the room (the bed linen, carpets, etc) were very clean.
The concierge staff were delightful and ever so helpful -- they knew everything about the city. We also had a great breakfast one morning and were very pleased with the quality and selection. The hotel bar was fantastic too and the decor throughout the lobby areas is modern, chic and uber cool.
We did have tapas one night at the hotel's restaurant. Whilst more expensive than other tapas restaurants, the quality was excellent.
Overall, we'd highly recommnend the Gran Melia. It probably ranks number 2 or 3 of the best hotels we've ever stayed at. And, we'll definitely try other Melia hotels as a result too.
