This place is where Los Lobos band came from-- we all know the song Macarena. Across the street is a park (we left there quickly because junkies were shooting up and eyeing us) and we quickly scooted into the most adorable cafe for coffee and pastries while we waited for the cathedral to open.
The statue of Mary is so exquisite and detailed with crystal teardrops. She's wearing brooches from matadors thanking her for safeguarding them in bullfights. It's a moving experience.
The neighborhoods around it are a little sketchy although we did walk here from our hotel (About a 20 minute walk) during daylight. Lots of arguments (loud yelling, bottles breaking) between people as we walked the streets so we just moved quickly and kept our heads down. We chose to walk back so it wasn't overly frightening. But I wouldn't visit late in the evening or after dark in the neighborhood because of the people around there. If I had kids with us I would have taken a cab to get there.
