Oiartzun is a' must stop' for epicurean delights in San Sebastian! I had asked in the open forum for tips for great bakeries...this one literally takes the cake :) I have been in the restarant biz all of my life so am always looking for new ideas to bring home...and great tastes to enjoy abroad.
The consistent quality of product is something normal for San Sebastian eateries... Oiartzun lifts the standard even higher. I had well over a week in SS and this was by far my fav place for a sweet stop.
A nice beverage and pastry is a standard way to start your day it seems...or a nice break in the afternoon... this place was always busy. It is located just as you enter into the old city, behind the park and Govt building... They have tables outside or you can walk to the park which is just a few steps away.
As it was late October when I was in...Polvorone were available as well as some lovely Turrons and Slices.. I had been told these items are more often near the holiday season but I am sure someone can let us know if available more year round. Yemas is something regional...they use it in a few varieties... an egg yolk base..with an interesting story of origin for those who wish to google it ;) Quite nice on thier own like small trufas and divine in the coconut slice (both pictured). They make a cream slice which is crazazy !! It is a house specialty and you will need to walk the entire promenade when done...but well worth it!
The macaron here is sublime for you foodies who have fallen under thier spell. Crisp shell, tall foot, one of the best...period! They also do a coconut cookie which is more a macaroon... it is a house specialty and also very good with a hot beverage.
My fav mini meal was prob the Walnut & Fruit Tartlet... pictured with a few other sinful tarts.. baked custard with very little sugar so the true flavours and profiles come out. The rolled pinenut cookie is another treat not to be missed... after having an awful experience with the horrible chinese pine nuts available in North America..it is a treat to have the precious, real thing here!!
The choc croissant and pan au chocolate are something you just have to experience to believe lol
I had several days to sample... I feel bad for anyone of you who have to choose just one or two things lol
oh yes, I should add that the absolute best trufas (truffle) are made here...my photo did not work but they make several flavours...I brought samples back of every single one for my biz partner...I think I have brownie points till 2012 now !
The staff were always so very nice... I purchased some assortments to bring back to Canada for my staff..they packaged them well when they knew they were going on the plane.. they also gave me a small box of Polvorones for a gift lol I guess that many days of drooling over thier glass ~ they thought i might need a slow detox lol
In any event.... one of many fantastic places in San Sebastian... and yes there are many... would be a shame to miss this bakery on a visit tho so hope this helps you check it out.
