“Off the charts. Be sure to go at lunchtime to enjoy the view”
For the reservation, I contacted them about one month in advance and got my first request (which was a 1pm reservation on a Friday). I wasn't expecting a table with a view but got a fantastic one. Sadly, it was raining (as it does often in San Sebastian) but luckily cleared up towards the end. The view's stunning and I recommend that you request a window seat.
I was able to take a cab from my hotel to Akelare and it cost about 10 euro from nearby the bus station.
I opted for one of the set menus (Bekarki) and opted for the wine pairing (which was 40 euro).
Each dish, from the amuse bouche until dessert, was both visually impressive and delicious, though I was not blown away by any dish in particular. The food was consistently outstanding.
To be honest, though, I was more impressed by the wine paired with the food. This sommelier has talent.
The service is impeccable and felt subdued- you could enjoy your meal in peace, but someone always swooped in whenever I was about to look for the waiter. I felt very comfortable. It seemed like all of the waiters and the sommelier spoke English well.
The chef was on hand and stopped by the table, a nice touch and good to know he's there and is ensuring the quality of what's leaving his kitchen. The only unfortunate thing is that he didn't speak English (apparently French, Basque, and Spanish).
The crowd was a mixture of families, friends (I think), and a range of attired- jeans, jackets, and everything in between. You can expect to be comfortable here, relax and enjoy the experience.
