A week in December away from the UK was bound to be good, but this hotel exceeded our expectations. Location in the quiet part of Las Palmas, right on the main pedestrianised promenade looking out on the bay, plus its own car park was really good; but the best thing of all was the quality of staff customer care and quality of the evening buffet in the main ground floor restaurant, or optionally the silver service roof-top restaurant

“Breakfast with a view”

Although we had a ground floor view so missed out on the fantastic views of Las Canteras beach, the comfort and great location made up for it.

The room was a good size but a little bit tired and in general, the décor of the hotel is a bit too standard, the location and friendliness of the staff compensate. Try to get a breakfast table near the window, or even better outside on the terrace and you will enjoy the buffet with stunning views over the beach and watch the people of Las Palmas taking the first stroll of the day.

“Avoid it! Overpriced, tired, old, place.”

Great position and nice roof top pool and that's about it on the positive side.
For a hotel at this level, excellent service is crucial and something that seems to have been missed by the management of Reina Isabel. Surly staff at reception. One poor woman running around like mad at breakfast trying to serve coffee & tea to everyone whilst fork polisher polishes forks and food checker checks position of things, ignoring guests.
Had read that it had been refurbished. What they did I'm not sure as it has an odd seventies feel (not in a funky sense) once you get beyond the public areas. And, oh dear, they went for mdf trim in the misguided hope of adding elegance. Unfortunately it's rotting in places (our bathroom), unsightly and inexcusable in a hotel of this star rating and price.
Talking of which, why does a place ask 240 euros for a room and trust you to have the money to pay for it when you check out but then insist on charging you 12 euros deposit, in cash, for a towel to take to their sunbeds?
Maybe the sad state of the hotel (which obviously had a heyday a long time ago) reflects the state of this part of Las Palmas. A great urban beach seems to have been abandoned by tourists and locals alike. Tourists head south from the airport to the resorts. Locals hang out in the old part of town a good way from here.
Plenty of Saga clients staying here in early November - maybe they get a good deal but at standard rates the place leaves a lot to be desired. There is huge competition on this island as in the rest of the Canaries and this place seems to be trading on former glories.
I'm a huge fan of faded elegance and all that but this place is just a worn out has been and in desperate need of a great deal of money spending on it. Like the area of Las Canteras itself, where Reina Isabel is situated
If all you are looking for is winter sun it may be better to try the newer hotels in the south of the island. If you are in search of winter sun, a decent hotel and a vibrant city as well then give this place a miss.

“Don't get a room on the back of the hotel!”

Hi
We chose this hotel because it was a great (cheap) price and we wanted a hotel on a sandy beach on a budget. This was totally the case, and the beach is long and very beautiful. The hotel is very nice and clean, lots of marble and quite traditional looking. It has a lovely bar round the sea side of the hotel, and when we checked out we were given a courtesy room so we could change after swimming, which was very good of them. The staff are very polite and helpful. The breakfast buffet is very good indeed.

HOWEVER, please take note of this! If you are planning to stay here then do pay the extra and book a room with a sea view. Not for the obvious aesthetic reasons but because of the terrible noise 24 hours a day if you stay on the back side of the building. There is building work all day, and all night there are noisy traffic, drunks and general screaming, emptying of bins (how often do they need to do this! At 4 in the morning and again!). The first night we asked to be moved up from the 2nd floor because we didn't sleep at all. They moved us to the 7th, and then we found out that night that we were right underneath the ballroom floor of the top floor bar and had to endure really loud music and people walking on our heads until 11pm when we hadn't slept the night before. So we asked to pay for an upgrade to go to the seaview side of the building but it was all prebooked. So we spent a week unable to sleep.

Admittedely they have windows and air conditioning, so you can have the window shut and not go through half of the noise level, but if you're like us and can't sleep with air conditioning and no "real" air on then you're in for a week of no sleep.

But if it hadn't been for this we'd return to this hotel because everything else about it is great, and it's totally worth the money, how could it not be!

my wife and i enjoyed a wonderful weeks stay at the reina (oct 8th -oct 15th 2007).location could not be bettered, all staff very efficient and helpful, reception always english speaking, buffet breakfast as good if not better than that found on top class cruise liners, pool area superb, never any trouble getting a sunbed,we had a street facing room (130) but with the double glazing we experienced no noise at night whatsoever.two slight quibbles however, english tv channels very limited and no tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but that's nit picking really, altogether an excellent hotel and highly recommended.
