Visited North Tenerife Puerto del la Cruz with the sole purpose of climbing El Teide. Take the bus 348 from the bus depot which leaves at 9/9.15am, journey takes about 2 hours with 2 brief stops which takes you to the Teleferico station. Better to buy a return ticket from the bus depot. On one
of the websites its mentioned not to be late down from the mountain as the last bus leaves the teleferico station at 4pm, to be correct, this is not the last bus, its the only bus that takes you back, the same one that brings you here in the morning. No buses during the day to go back. To climb
to the top of the mountain to you have to take the cable car to the base of the mountain, costs
25 euros return per person, bit pricey for under a 10 minute journey each way but worth it. Be sure
to obtain the permit online to climb the mountain, no charge, log on to website fill in details & download, all you need to carry are passports for ID for all who are named on the permit. We went in March so not a long queue for cable car. Read somewhere that it gets busy in the summer months with a long queues to get on the cars. Because the journey on the bus to the Teleferico takes 2 hours we booked the timing on the permit for 1pm. We were allowed to walk on earlier because there were no crowds, so take this into consideration when obtaining the permit. Website enclosed.
Very, very breezy, you will need your jacket & good walking shoes. High altitude so take it easy. Once up there the scenery is magnificent, we were lucky we had a beautiful sunny day so had lovely views all around.
There is a restaurant at the Teleferico station as well as a cafe where you can buy sandwiches & hot or cold drinks, prices a bit more than you would expect to pay so be prepared.
All in all a wonderful experience.
