Have just got back from the bahia flamingo and we had a superb time. Initially we didn't like our ground floor room (not much of a view) so the hotel changed it for us (first floor, fantastic views of ocean and sunsets) - no fuss, no questions, it was so easy!!
We found all of the staff to be very friendly and they couldn't do enough to help you - no matter WHAT your nationality. The place was clean and tidy; the food was what you would expect from a 3 star hotel - we went all-inclusive and never went hungry (or thirsty, but that's another tale !!). OK, you'll never please all of the guests all of the time, but it suited us just fine. If you go AI then at mealtimes you just go into the dining area (make sure you're wearing that wrist-band !) and help yourself to what you want - there are always available tables; use the microwave if you want your food hotter (it's to the right of the toaster and juice/water machines); if you want proper toast, put your bread in twice; DON'T have the red wine - it's chilled and really awful; stick to white wine, sangria or beer. If you're anything like us though, after a week of AI it does get a bit much so we went to the wonderful Tai restaurant next door but 2 (to the left of the hotel as you exit) for our last night and had a lovely chinese banquet (with a half-decent bottle of red too)
The pool and surrounding area was very clean but a word of warning - it is slippery when you get out of the pool; I always went in my flip-flops and kept them by the pool steps for when I got out. You do have to get up early to get a good spot though - we got into the habit of taking our towels down on the way to breakfast and 'reserving' our loungers. The worse culprits were the Brits, not the Germans !! If you can't beat 'em..........
Our room was cleaned every day except Sunday and although not spotlessly shining, it was good enough for us - you're hardly going to eat off the bathroom floor, are you? The safe is in your wardrobe and you have to pay extra at reception for a key to operate it but if you want peace of mind then it's worth it. There is no air-conditioning but we went in November so it was ok, as long as we kept the patio curtains closed until about 1pm to keep the sun out; we also had the fan going on medium to keep the room cool. You have 2 sets of curtains, the heavier ones are to keep the room dark at night; this comes in handy when your English neighbours insist on keeping their balcony light on 24/7 !! Extra blankets and pillows are in the wardrobe too -if not, you only have to ask and the maids are more than happy to help. The TV needs a remote from reception (extra charge) but we didn't bother as we didn't come all that way just to watch TV.
The bar was great, the staff were wonderful and the entertainment was a hoot. OK, some nights it was a bit naff but you can always have a laugh with your fellow guests; some nights the entertainment was brilliant so there's something for everyone pretty much.
The surrounding area was ok; if you go to Los Gigantes, take a taxi from the place up the road (or phone them), it only costs 4 euros (about £2.90) to get there and although the place is small, the cliffs jutting out of the sea are very impressive. There is a huge market at Los Cristianos on Sundays (about 1.5 hour journey away). The hotel does run a trip there but it's much cheaper if you get a TITSA bus yourself from the stop across the road - we paid 12 euros return for the 2 of us, which the hotel charges for 1 of you but it's even cheaper if you get a BONNO ticket from one of the shops in town (look for the signs on the shop doors) and use that. If you need to make a call home there is a small amusement arcade in town with 2 international phones at the front - a lot cheaper than the hotel (and internet access there is too). If you need to make a local phone call to confirm your return flight etc then the phone just outside the hotel (to the left) is the best way to do this - again, much cheaper than using the phone in the hotel. The prom is lovely to stroll along of an evening, and the beach is very clean - gets very crowded @ the weekends so best to visit in the week. The nearby bar the Pilgrims Rest is good too and they'll look after you well.
Lastly, we booked a transfer via the internet to get from the airport to the hotel. It cost us 80 euros return and the inbound journey was horrendous. It took us 2 and a half hours to get to our hotel on a coach as we must have dropped about 50 other people off at their various hotels on the way. Having said that, the journey from the hotel back to the airport was much better, in a minibus this time, taking only 1 hour. I've since found out that it only costs another 5 or 6 euros more to get a taxi there/back and it will be a much shorter journey as it's direct. I think we'll do that from now on - you live and learn eh??
So go and enjoy yourself - I hope you have as pleasant a break as we did !!
