We recently returned from a European vacation, which included a 2 night stay at the Regencia Colon in Barcelona. If you're looking for an affordable hotel, I highly recommend this one.
This is not a fancy hotel by any means, but is perfectly serviceable and an excellent value for the money. The staff are friendly and helpful (they speak excellent English also). The room was average sized (from my experience in European hotels), and perfectly fine. The in-room bathroom was fairly nice as well. Our reservation included breakfast, which consisted of cheese, cold cuts, yogurts, pastries and scrambled eggs.
More importantly, the location of this hotel is amazing. It is just feet away from Barcelona Cathedral / Placa Nova right in the Barri Gotic. And it's just a short walk from La Rambla (great place to people watch and have dinner) and Placa Catalunya. We took the Aerobus from the airport to Placa Catalunya (5,65 euros per person one way) and were easily able to walk to the hotel with our luggage. Just be sure you're heading the right direction before you start walking! Due to an early morning flight, we took a taxi to the airport when we were leaving, and I believe it was 37 euros (with baggage fees and airport tarrifs).
My only gripe (and it's a seriously small one) is that the walls in our room were paper thin. Perhaps the folks next door were especially loud, but it sounded as if they were in the same room with us. We were on the first floor and could hear a fair amount of street noise as well in the wee hours of the morning. This really isn't a big deal - just be prepared for it.
I would definitely stay here again if I return to Barcelona, and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
I'd suggest requesting a higher floor to help cut down on street noise.
