To begin, the reason we stayed at the Montecarlo for an overnighter before returning home from our vacation was as a result of the reviews on Tripadvisor. (My wife and I had arrived in Barclelona two weeks earlier and stayed at another property in the same proximity of Placa Catalunya prior to going on a 7 day cruise. We decided to try another hotel to expand upon our already wonderful experiences in Barcelona). We opted for a late departure from our ship and checked in to the Montecarlo after 1 pm. Staff at the desk were welcoming. After settling in we did some further sightseeing and returned to the hotel late afternoon. We rested up a bit and then changed to go out for a final night in Barcelona. My wife placed her watch on the main cabinet in the room and put on a different one. When we returned from dinner later that evening, she noticed the watch was missing. While it was not an expensive one it had sentimental value. After an exhaustive search of the room I went down to the front desk to report the missing item. (Somebody had definitely been in the room while we were out as our towels had been refolded in the bathroom). The night desk clerk took my information but stated with polite indifference that "such things don't happen at this hotel." I will spare the details and further interaction with staff the next day, only to say that upon our return home and at the time of this review, my email to hotel management remains unanswered and not so much as an apology or regret.
At 200 euros (233 with breakfast) in my opinion the hotel is over priced for the amenities (or lack of) that are touted in this four star advertised as a "boutique hotel" and "quality without the frills". Rather, it has an institution like feeling which is more suitable for business travel. There is a roof top solarium which is very basic and has no phone, necessitating you get your own beverages. The rooms are contemporary and comfortable. But with the renovations the hotel touts are constantly being made, maybe an electronic key entry system can enhance security rather than having to leave your key at the front desk? In all, hard to be objective after our negative experience.
Towards rear of building.

We can guarantee your watch did not disappear from your hotel room. You know that.

The only person, who came into your room, was the evening maid for the turn down service. This has been proved electronically with our door lock system.
This maid has worked for Montecarlo Hotel for many years and she is fully trusted.
You informed us that the cost of your watch was around 150 -200 Euros. What did you try to do? Having your one night stay in our hotel almost for free?
In this hotel, we do not steal our guests; they are the most important thing for us.
