We had originally planned to stay somewhere else but finances dictated I find somewhere a little less expensive. And what a bargain this turned out to be! I booked it online via an agency and it worked out as about £70 a night for two. It's a bit corporate - there were a few conferences going on - but hey, if you're going to Barcelona to hang about the hotel you must be mad!!
The Metro was a two minute walk and a 4 day travel card cost 16 euros. It takes about 10 minutes to get to Jaime I which is the station between Barri Gotic and La Ribera (5 minute stroll to La Rambla through some of the best streets you will ever see) and your ticket will get you everywhere you could want to go. It meant we actually got off our backsides and saw a bit more of Barcelona than the tourist hotspots and managed to get our bearings a lot quicker.
And what to see!! I won't go on but it's just so wonderful! Just go explore everywhere - you won't be disappointed. Do find time to check out Gimlet in La Ribera - a cocktail bar with no menu because the girl working there knows how to make them all!! And I'm not talking some poseur bar - just an old fashioned cherry wood polished bar, mellow music, chilled out type place...
Anyway - back to the hotel. Surprisingly it was actually quite nice to get out of the centre and back to the hotel. It's situated in a residential/office area with a big shopping centre round the corner and a certain amount of building work going on. But it wasn't a problem. The Metro runs until 2 at the weekend (12 in the week) but a taxi only costs 7-8 euros if you're later than that. Some drivers aren't sure where it is so we just asked to get dropped of at the Metro station (makes things much simpler)which is Salva de Mar.
So - the hotel wasn't spectacular but it was very reasonable, very clean, very modern and the staff were very helpful and professional. The room was spacious, bed comfy and the shower great! The breakfast was good, too. I would recommend this hotel to any one staying in Barcelona but do bear in mind I'm not a fusspot and if you're after something really special this probably isn't the place for you. But if you want value for money and absolutely nothing to complain about then go. Would I stay here again? Definitely - unless I win the lottery, of course..!
