I stayed at Tryp Diana for one night in April 2007. This hotel is close to Barajas Airport in Madrid and I had selected it based on its 4-star designation and proximity to the airport.

After arrival at Barajas Airport Terminal 2, I called the hotel to ask for a shuttle to pick me up (this was advertised as an available service). The shuttle arrived after about 30 minutes, even though the hotel is hardly more than 5 minutes from the airport. It also waited another 10 minutes at the next terminal, all together it took me 40 minutes to get to the hotel which is 1 kilometre from the airport.

Whilst service at the hotel was friendly, the place is seriously run down and not of a standard even approaching 4-star quality:
- Carpets in the corridors are very worn and the place generally has an extremely tired feel to it;
- There is no internet in the hotel, apart from a hotel computer that costs 3 Euro per hour to use (at reception they said there was no way to use my own laptop);
- The room was not clean (various hairs in different places in the room and bathroom, dirty floor in the bathroom, dirty table tops in the room, very scratched and worn walls in the room, the hotel information documents in the room had various stains on them);
- The bath drain was partially blocked, resulting in significant water buildup in the bathtub during a shower;
- Noise from other rooms was very audible (drain from upstairs room appeared to be inside air-conditioning outlet of my room, resulting in toilet flushes and showers being clearly audible and keeping me awake; snoring from an adjacent room was audible). Also the door to the room was poorly soundproofed, resulting in noise from the corridor being audible as if people were more or less inside my room;
- There was no minibar in the room;
- The in-room safe is operated with a physical key (not with the card key or with a numeric keypad), and in my room this key was missing;
- The TV had only 16 channels, of which 4 were pay channels, and several of the non-pay channels were tuned poorly (CNN had a constant buzz through the sound channel).

This hotel is part of the Sol Melia group, which is supposedly a quality chain. However by operating marginal joints like this, with so many faults that it cannot be considered accidental, it seriously soils its image. Plus one can be sure that if they operate one dump like this, there will be others in the chain. I am a frequent traveller and know what standards to expect in a 4-star hotel, and will not stay at Sol Melia hotels anymore.

“A nice short stay”

We stayed for one night, and had no complaint. The staff was friendly, the shuttle from airport came promptly. The next morning we had to be at the airport at a peak time, and the hotel arranged additional buses to take the guests to the terminals. The room and the bathroom were clean and pleasant. The Hotel is in a residential quarter, there are no restaurants or other facilities in the neighbourhood, but in the hotel itself there are bars, restaurants, etc. Recommended for a short stay.

“Wouldn't go there, EVER!”

I really did not enjoy my stay at this hotel. For starters, the cafeteria was awful! I was given a glass with lipstick stains on it (I ordered orange juice, you could hardly taste the orange). The food was poor. I was short changed at the end the meal, they owed me 5 euros! Don't eat in the cafeteria. Next, there was not much shower gel left in the dispenser. There is no wireless internet connection. The walls are quite thin, I was kept awake by some woman chatting on her phone in the room next door. The TV came on randomly in the middle of the night with my welcome message. I was lucky I wasn't near the disco, that would have kept me up all night too. I was talking with other guests who were kept awake because of it. The only good thing about this hotel was the shuttle bus, it was quick, prompt and there were regular trips to and from the airport.

We booked 4 nights at this hotel near the airport, because we had an early flight and liked to stayed in madrid the last 4 days of our trip. This hotel is very near the airport but very very far away from any point of interest in madrid. We had a car rented so for us it was no big deal going to and from the city, but one night we payed a taxi and it was like 19 euros wich is very expensive. there is a new line of metro near by but like for a 15 or 20 min walk, or you can ride the bus wich has a station near by. but I think that for the price of this hotel if you do not need to be near the airport look for other hotels in madrids gran via or paseo del prado. or streets near all the interesting stuff. About the hotel its kind of old, people at front desk not overly friendly, it has a bar downstairs, a car rental and a travel agency and restaurant, I didnt visit any of them so no comment. About the rooms ok a bit worn, clean yes no ammenities except for a bar of soap and a shampoo, big towels. It has a safety box on the room but you have to pay 1 euro for every time you open it! It has a parking lot for hotel guests wich is 17 euro per day .

This is the hotel that Tryp forgot.

I booked by Priceline asking for a 3star because I thought for one night between flights, I wanted to pamper myself. I certainly won't use Priceline as long as this hotel is available. The rugs in the hallways are threadbare and the woodwork around the elevators and rooms are dented and smashed.

The room itself was better. The carpet wasn't threadbare, but was well-worn and needs to be restretched. The two giant cracks in the walls would worry me if I owned the joint. The porcelain in the bathroom is worn through around the drains.

Not a pampering experience and I certainly won't assume a Tryp hotel is worth it's price tag.
