Having read the previous reviews for this place I was a little apprehensive, though for the price I decided to go ahead with it.

The reception staff didnt speak great English (though I found this in most of Madrid) but you got by. The hotel is a little grubby and in need of a facelift. The lifts look like they could break down at any time.

The breakfasts are poor. You get a choice of 2 cereals, a small bread roll with the usual cheese, ham and salami you normally get at European hotels. I would suggest not bothering booking B&B, nobody checks anyway so you might even be able to blag something. There is a 24hr shop next door to the hotel that provides most stuff to get you by anyway.

As for the noise. We stayed on the 4th floor at the back of the hotel and didnt hear any traffic noise although the rooms ARE thin walled and you hear a lot of door slamming, toilet/bathroom activities and conversations. The beds were made each day though the sheets werent changed!

There are plus points though. As everyone says the location really is good, the nearest metro is a couple of minutes away, as is the main shopping areas.

If you are on a budget then this hotel is probably only on par with some of the better hostels, so you may want to look around. All in all its only a place to get your head down and you get what you pay for at the end of the day.

“Great Location - not so great hotel.”

I stayed at the Hotel Alexandra last weekend - Feb 7th to feb 10th. The location is brilliant as it is located just off of Gran Via, right near all the threatres. The entrance to the hotel was clean & average for a european hotel. We had booked a double room but on arrival were given a twin room & were told that even though there were rooms available! The staff in general were fine but two of the men working on reception were very rude & not one bit helpful. They also refused to speak english, even though they knew exactly what we were saying. The room itself was clean - the beds were changed everyday & the bathroom was small but fine. It's very true about the carpets, they are TERRIBLE & dirty looking. We had breakfast in the hotel on the first morning but I would suggest giving this a miss as the cereal was gone off & there was very little choice. All in all the hotel is fine if ilke me you want a clean, not too expensive hotel to basically put your head down in at night as you will be out all day. One thing that this place really has going for it is it's location, it is so close to everything that you would easily put up with the rudeness & not so great furnishings. Don't think I will be back here though, the Emporer Hotel on the corner on Gran Via looks a much better choice.

“Fabulous Stay”

Hotel Alexandra

Just got back from a four night stay at the Hotel Alexandra. I had booked everything through Easyjet Holidays and seeing as, in my opinion I got an amazing bargain (£140 per person) which included the flight and accommodation, I wasnt really expecting anything much from this hotel, however I was surprised. Reception area was very welcoming. I wasnt put off by the fact when I said "we have a reservation" the young gentleman said no. However after showing him our receipt he quickly provided us with our key and up we went to the 6th floor.

The room was spacious and clean, as was the bathroom. Desk with portable TV, cupboard and a safe within that. We even had a veranda!!!!!!

The Hotel couldnt be in a more perfect location. Just next door is a 24 hour store, restaurants on both sides of the streets, cafe across the road, hairdresser next door. Just up the street and to your left is the bus stop on Grand Via. The tour bus also stops here (stop 19 on the tour). There are also several Metro stations nearby.

Staff were so obliging. Rooms were cleaned on a daily basis. I would definately have no hesitation in re-booking this hotel.

I stayed for one night only at the Hotel Alexandra and would probably do again, even though it is slightly on the pricey side for a hotel in this category (2 star). Perhaps if I'd booked online, I might have paid less. In the event, I simply turned up at the hotel without having made a reservation in advance and was charged the rack rate of 79 Euros (inclusive of tax) for a single room. Even though a notice at reception said that breakfast would cost extra, I wasn't actually charged for it. The room was comfortable enought , though rather functional and characterless, and the bathroom (with bath and matching plug!) was spacious and well-appointed. My room was not at the front of the hotel, so I heard no traffic noise during the night. There is free Internet access in the lobby. The breakfast was fine, though not particularly exciting. Staff were pleasant and efficient. The location is fine - just a minute's walk from the nearest Metro station, Noviciado. One of the city's main thoroughfares, the Gran Via, is only a few hundred metres away There are also some excellent restaurants and tapas bars within a couple of minute's walk from the hotel - I ate at one called Meson O'Luar, which I would warmly recommend.

I stayed here for 3 nights just off The Grand Via near to 3 Metro stations and bus stop excellent for getting around Madrid. Staff were very helpfull. Room was clean and bed linen and towels changed daily. Economical clean basic accomodation but be prepared for traffic noise, but as Madrid is the city that never sleeps I would think that this is a problem in any central city hotel.
I would certainly stay there again
