We chose to stay at the Puerta America Hotel after a recommendation from a friend and I can truly say that it is a hotel like no other. The hotel is so modern that we initially walked straight past the front door! There is no grand entrance as you would expect to find at such a hotel. Instead, entrance is gained via two smaller unassuming, sliding frosted glass doors which have no markings or other obvious entrance signs.
Check in was quick and easy and we were escorted to our Kathryn Findlay designed room on the 8th Floor. The Bellboy not only showed us to our room but also showed us around once inside. Now at any other hotel I would deem this to be a bit excessive, but here it was greatly appreciated as there are features that we would have missed or had to search for had we not be shown.
The door to our room reminded me of the doors aboard the Starship Enterprise. The room itself had two single beds alongside each wall. The T.V dropped down from the ceiling in front of the window at the foot of the beds. The window had a net curtain and an electronically controlled blackout blind as well as a cushioned seating area in front of the window. A control panel on the left hand wall controlled the lights, air conditioning and the window blind.
Our room was well equipped with bathrobes, slippers, toothbrushes, razors and toiletries as well as a Safe and Mini bar. There were a couple of areas to hang up clothes and a couple of small cupboards both of which could be curtained off.
The ‘Bathroom’ was incorporated in the room itself and was just a curtained off area in the corner of the room with a washbasin and a rainforest shower into the bathtub. The toilet was separated by another Starship Enterpride style sliding door. Our initial concerns regarding the bathroom set up were that the entire room would steam upon showering, however i can happily report that our fears were unfounded and the room remained steam free.
We did not make use of any of the restaurants but we did sample some of the cocktails in the Skynight Bar on the 13th Floor which overlooks the Madrid skyline. Whilst not particularly cheap, the cocktails most definitely contained a good percentage of alcohol. Also located on the 13th Floor Attic are the Spa, Gym and the very cool looking mirror Swimming pool.
Although not the most centrally located hotel in Madrid, the Puerta America Hotel gets full marks for style and individuality. When i return to Madrid i will definitely stay here again and have no hestitation in recommending this hotel to others.
