This is not a 5 star hotel by UK standards, but more a 3 plus.
We arrived via the waterfalls and palm trees of the hotel entrance of this large 1960’s style concrete building. After unloading our own luggage from the car, we proceeded to check-in. Here we received beach towel cards, after signing a 15 Euro per person refundable deposit and paid for the room safe key (I hate having to pay a daily rate for a safe). Additionally, you have to pay to park your car.
The room was plainly furnished but clean and comfortable: safe, TV, air-conditioning, balcony and mini-bar. The bathroom was basic but practical, as I said earlier, not a 5 star. In fact the only nice touch was robes and slippers in the room.
The hotel outdoor pool is rather small and cramped, with very few sunbeds available; there is however more space in the surrounding grass gardens where additional and plentiful beds are provided. The hotel does has an impressively large indoor pool, which would be a great plus if travelling in the Winter months.
We opted for the beach, directly in front of the hotel and accessed via steps, but this is a public beach so beds and parasol are chargeable (3 Euros each). San Juan beach is without doubt glorious, with soft sand and clear blue waters. Surrounding the hotel you can see the high rise concrete monstrosity of the Alicante coastline, with it’s graffiti covered buildings. Disappointingly, directly adjacent and overlooked by the hotel is a graffiti covered dilapidated building (see photo). Bet the hotel wish they could tear it down.
A nice spa (all chargeable) and well equipped modern gym add a little luxury and the poolside restaurant served a fabulous freshly prepared cuisine, in alfresco surroundings with a great sea view.
Breakfast was fabulous, great selection of hot and cold buffet food in lovely surroundings. We opted for the outdoor area, where we again had a fabulous view. White linen and efficient staff created a great start to the day.
The hotel hourly or so courtesy bus into Alicante (10 minutes) was very handy, but book ahead for a space as it gets busy. Alternatively, take the 22 bus for one Euro each.
In summary, a good quality 3 star plus hotel; but don’t expect 5 star surroundings or you will be disappointed.
