“Good Enough”

Sidi San Juan Hotel

It isn't really a 5 star hotel from the perspective of rooms, furnishings, public areas and breakfast. It is fine though and comfortable enough. 4 star it would be.

The gardens are very good for relaxing and there are plenty of sunbeds. The beach is clean and a walk of about 15mins brings you to the promenade where there are several restaurants and cafes. On he street it takes about 20 mins to walk there. It is a pleasant area, popular (as is the hotel) with Spanish families.

English isn't widely spoken but phrasebook Spanish easily gets you what you want. There is a pleasant supermercado and a bar just on the corner.

We had one dinner in the hotel. The fixed price of 35 euros wasn't worth it and there were few diners even though the hotel seemed to be packed.

The hotel minibus is great value but you do have to book as it seats about 8 only. Taxi from the airport is 27 or 28 euros.

Have just returned from a short break at this Hotel 4th July - 7th July . I have stayed in many 5 star Hotels and this is definitely not a five star. The bedrooms are very dated with curtains not matching bedding. The bathroom was well equipped. The balcony was very small. In the evenings there is no entertainment apart from a Piano in the bar and during my stay only one restaurant was open for an evening meal. Whilst the food was good it is expensive. The Hotel is in an urbanization area and there is nothing apart from the Hotel and the Beach. A car is essential if you do not wish to use the local transport. The sunbathing area around the Hotel is very limited with little space between the sun loungers. You have to be up early to reserve a sun lounger as towels can be found on the majority of loungers early morning which is annoying when the person who has reserved it does not turn up until late in the day. The beach is good but you do have to pay 3 euros for a sun bed, 6 euros if you have a sunshade. If you are a family this can work out expensive each day.

“Fabulous location”

This hotel is in a fabulous location right on the lovely beach, and is about four and a half stars. Service and cleanliness was excellent, but it was let down by its ridiculously small outdoor pool, and some niggly extra charges that you would expect to come as standard in what is claimed to be a five star hotel. The rooms were smart enough but on the small side, and whilst all are claimed to have a sea view as standard, ours was a partial sea view.
However, overall our stay was great, and I would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a good comfortable hotel in a fantastic location.

“Not 5 stars”

Sidi San Juan Hotel

23 Jun 2007

This is not a 5 star hotel by UK standards, but more a 3 plus.

We arrived via the waterfalls and palm trees of the hotel entrance of this large 1960’s style concrete building. After unloading our own luggage from the car, we proceeded to check-in. Here we received beach towel cards, after signing a 15 Euro per person refundable deposit and paid for the room safe key (I hate having to pay a daily rate for a safe). Additionally, you have to pay to park your car.

The room was plainly furnished but clean and comfortable: safe, TV, air-conditioning, balcony and mini-bar. The bathroom was basic but practical, as I said earlier, not a 5 star. In fact the only nice touch was robes and slippers in the room.

The hotel outdoor pool is rather small and cramped, with very few sunbeds available; there is however more space in the surrounding grass gardens where additional and plentiful beds are provided. The hotel does has an impressively large indoor pool, which would be a great plus if travelling in the Winter months.

We opted for the beach, directly in front of the hotel and accessed via steps, but this is a public beach so beds and parasol are chargeable (3 Euros each). San Juan beach is without doubt glorious, with soft sand and clear blue waters. Surrounding the hotel you can see the high rise concrete monstrosity of the Alicante coastline, with it’s graffiti covered buildings. Disappointingly, directly adjacent and overlooked by the hotel is a graffiti covered dilapidated building (see photo). Bet the hotel wish they could tear it down.

A nice spa (all chargeable) and well equipped modern gym add a little luxury and the poolside restaurant served a fabulous freshly prepared cuisine, in alfresco surroundings with a great sea view.

Breakfast was fabulous, great selection of hot and cold buffet food in lovely surroundings. We opted for the outdoor area, where we again had a fabulous view. White linen and efficient staff created a great start to the day.

The hotel hourly or so courtesy bus into Alicante (10 minutes) was very handy, but book ahead for a space as it gets busy. Alternatively, take the 22 bus for one Euro each.

In summary, a good quality 3 star plus hotel; but don’t expect 5 star surroundings or you will be disappointed.

I stayed at this hotel with three friends on a golfing trip. When I first e mailed an enquiry, the hotel responded within hours with a very favourable quote, they pre booked tee times and on arrival we were welcomed by a guest relations person who couldn't have been more helpful over the four days. The rooms are average to good but all have beautiful views over the beach. Similarly the bar area was very relaxing in the evening looking out to sea. The buffet breakfast was very good hot and cold. The hotel is spotless on the inside and we found the staff friendly and helpful. The main downside of the hotel may also be a plus - it is located a 15euro taxi ride from town, whenever we enquired about the courtesy bus it was booked up. The old town is ideal for a wander and a few drinks at night but be warned, it only gets lively at around midnight! Check out Ladradores tapas bar - unbelievable food and cheap too. On the plus side the hotel is on a long beach with direct access from the hotel and we loved a quick dip (free!) at the end of the day. Yes, you do pay for things, parking 11euro per day, towel deposit , safe etc but what the hell - it's a bit of luxury - enjoy!
