“Nightmare at the Melia”

Melia Alicante

13 May 2008

Where do we start!!!!!!!!!!

I wont bore you too much, so i will point out the reasons i would never stay at the Melia again and leave it to you to decide if you book or not.

We stayed 5 nights, 2 Adults and small child of 3 years of age.

The cleaniness of the hotel was average. The hotel reception staff were the rudest, most unfriendly and unhelpful staff I've ever met...and over the years i've met lots of recption staff at the hotels i've stayed at! We were treated as an inconvenience!

After this hotel was recommended to us, we booked direct and asked for a quiet room in a quiet part of the hotel. On arrival we were given a room which was directly above the music stage of the dining room...the room where breakfast is served and the main function room. On the 2nd night of our stay, a party was being held for the end of a conference. At 11.30pm a live band started playing...so loud that after 2 complaints to reception we were told that the only thing we could do was move to another part of the hotel....AT 2AM!! Everything re-packed and us and our 3 year old moved rooms! Not ideal!! The party carried on until 4-5am!

The following morning we spoke to management, we were told there would be no financial compensation, but all the could do was move us to a bigger room. In short, for our 5 day stay this was the 3rd room we slept in.

Breakfast was plentiful, but quality was average.

Dinner..there was only one restaurant, which was quite expensive and the restaurants nearby were desperate to get you to their tables, but only managed to serve very average-poor quality food considering the prices!

Lots of building work, road works, dust and noise around the hotel, therefore very difficult to get taxis to the hotel and they tried to avoid going near the hotel.

Swimming pool area very small for the size of the hotel, mostly in the shade and very often if there was a conference or wedding, some of the already limited space for sunbathing was taken over for this! No child pool either.

It wasn't a family friendly hotel and was more geared to business clients.

“Nice Hotel - Shame about the Weather!”

Just returned (9-12th May 3 nights)
I'll break this down to make up your own mind... myself I thought it was ok - and ideal for a short break at the the right price!

Rooms - I stayed on the 3rd Floor and paid a reasonable 67GBP a night for B&B with my wife..bless her it was a mothers day special treat away friom our 5 children!
The room was on the Beach side, noise not really a problem apart from a brackground hum of an external air con unit or something,
it had double patio doors which kept most of the sound out, and we overlooked the pool ( which we sat around when it wasn't raining!)
It was too cold to swim in for me tho'!
The room was ok, large bed... comfortable :-) but the decor was tired... especially in the bathroom ... definately not a 4* room
would liken it to a Post House chain room before the Holiday Inn took them over... so 2 to 3* at best!
(I stop at a lot of english hotels thro work)

Also be aware that there is major road work going on right outside on the marina side of the hotel!! and it is noisy and dusty!

The bar is a little expensive 6 euro for a small beer and a coffee!

The staff - all good and friendly, front reception and bar spoke english and were appoachable... we forgot to take an electrical adaptor plug and went to ask where to buy one and they sent one up almost immediately - so was impressed...
They will also supply a tourist map FOC is asked :-)

The Hotel is impressive, beautiful reception area, and the breakfast was excellent... the choice of food was fantastic - views and decor also great to dine in ... we were there whilst the Audi Races where taking place so loads of crews around early on
this bit was 4* !! we spent over a hour in breakfast daily as it was such a nice experience!

As it's a hotel it does have "do's" going on ... when the sun did come out and we found a quiet spot to relax in the sun - it was a bit dissapointing on this one occasion, we found ourselves witnessing just how rowdy and destructive a load of children can be without supervision :-O that were attending a confirmation.

So be warned!

The only reason perhaps we have picked up on small faults was due to the weather being poor over our long weekend and having to spend so much time in the hotel.... unbelieveably our 1st break aboard for 19 years and I just picked a bad one... not sure if you caught it on the news... flooding, buildings damaged etc on the TV... hey ho! 28 degrees back home .. typical!
Heres us wrapped in a towel keeping the cool breeze off trying to make the most of it!

We liked the hotel, it's position and the ease of getting from the airport and back! (the bus by the way - find stop 30 to the left of arrivals and get the number C-6 - last stop being across the road from the hotel 1.20 euro's )

Alicante itself - very spanish - you will need a phrase book to get by! but they are friendly people so don't be put off.. the hotel is very close to the old quarter with some beautiful buildings(and some falling/fallen down and quite abit of renovation going on!) along with some great tapas bars ( try and get used to the spanish day by the way... eat breakfast early... do lunch at midday... relax/siesta... eat again from 9pm onwards perhaps even later!!)

When searching for places to eat, we usually looked at who was popular and frequented by the spanish, this seemed to work!
- by the way smoking is still allowed in these if eating inside!

So... to sum up .. great for a long weekend .. not any longer!
and would return again or indeed recommend :-)
Shame about the weather... absolutely gutted we couldn't hit the beach or spend more time walking and sightseeing!
Still don't believe our luck!

“Good Hotel, Awful City”

Melia Alicante

6 May 2008

We stayed here for 4 nights in the Executive Level in a junior suite. I have to admit that I loved the Executive Level, you have an open bar with nibbles. You really make up the extra money here. You also have a continental breakfast here included. The room was massive and was very clean, views were excellent. The staff were very pleasant, especially in the executive level where you can check in and out hassle free.

The breakfasts were average, but we did not have dinner here. The hotel is right between the Marina and the beach and is a great location.

The one MAJOR downfall is on a Saturday Night. The noise from the Nightclub across the road is extremely loud, and I mean extreme. We were at the the top of the hotel and a nice distance away from the nightclub and we were blown away, even with windows and doors closed fully. The hotel would have got 4* if we were warned about this or if they had soundproof windows. This went on until about 6am. Really disappointing. The city itself was not very nice. It was dirty and just not very hospitable.

“An OK hotel but not great despite the prefect location”

Stayed here for a few days for work. When I walked in I was very impressed with the lobby and had high hopes but this expense and good taste does not translate to the rooms that are perfectly serviceable but no more than that. The staff were a little bit less helpful than I would like but not terrible. Once you go away from the front desk staff, English is limited and I did struggle when it came to calling room service etc.

Room service offers reasonable food but really I suppose it is the location that is the selling point, with the marina on one side and the sea on the other. An OK hotel but not great despite the prefect location.

“Great Position”

The Melia Alicante has prime position on Alicante's waterfront. We stayed 4 days in a room overlooking the beach (east side),the other side overlooks the marina. We walked into the hotel expecting a room of our choice but the hotel was pretty full, however the head receptionist (Christina) was extremely helpful and went the extra mile to accomodate us. The breakfast at this hotel is outstanding for it's choice and quality and was the best of any of the 5 four star hotels we'd stayed at during our 2 week self drive tour of SE Spain. The rooms were large, clean and with English channels on the tv. The only down side was the cost of public parking next to the hotel at 19 euros a night. However we parked in the town in an underground car park 15 mins walk away at half that cost . Overall a quality hotel, great postion which we'd definately stay at again! Tip: it's slightly cheaper to book on the hotel's website than just walk in.
