“Higher standard Holiday Inn Express, but it is 2.5 miles out of town”

We were a group of 6 sharing 3 rooms for 9 days over Christmas 2007.

Not used to staying in budget hotels, and having seen Holiday Inn Express standards before, we actually expected much worse than this, so had a pleasnt surprise. Frankly, the hotel is of a much higher standard than the Holiday Inn Express norm: the rooms are adequately sized, clean and comfortable. The rooms facing rear have an awful view of other buildings, the rooms at the front face the sea. The hotel would appear to be a couple of years old. There's an Ibis and an Etap next door - cheaper, but drastically lower standards and no breakfast.

Breakfast was buffet style and adequate, but did get monotonous after a few days because nothing ever changed: always the same cheese, meat, jam, bread types - but there was ample! Avoid the dispensed "fruit juice" though, it's just coloured, highly sweetened water!

We had a few problems whilst there with rooms (they all have tea/coffee making facilities, by the way) but everything was resolved courteously and promptly by the helpful staff. Sure, some members of staff were more helpful than others, and probably should be commended (hello: Eduardo] but none of us had any real complaints to make.

The biggest drawback is the location: it's 2.5 miles from town. We did know this before we booked, so we were fairly unperturbed - but bear in mind it is NOT possible to walk into town (there's no footpath: it's a highway), the bus costs €1 each way, but ceases at 10pm (just when we want to go out!) and a taxi from the hotel into town costs around €10-€12 with return fares around €7 - for some reason we always had to pay the cost of the taxi from the point it was called out.

They don't advertise the fact that a limited menu is available at the hotel in the evenings: pizza, bruschetta and the like - ask at the bar.

The bar/lounge area is big and airy but far too bright at night. I guess they deliberately provide uncomfortable chairs in this express hotel chain, because they don't provide comfort for people to linger. Most of the other residents during the week will be business people, as there's an industrial estate and a factory next door.

The beach directly opposite the hotel is tiny, and can only be reached by traversing the railway line. It was full of litter the whole of the time we were there.

We hired a car to get around, but getting home from town late at night will be a problem unless someone avoids alcohol (we hired a taxi).

There are some great places to explore: Elche, Torrevieja, Benidorm (yes!), Valencia, Guadalest, Altea. Alicante itself is a nice city, much bigger than we expected.

Stayed here overnight having arrived at Alicante airport the day before our chalet was available because the cost of the easyjet flight + the hotel on Friday was less than the same flight on Saturday.
Its a cheap and cheerful hotel, well run, clean, comfortable and friendly, helpful staff . Facilities, though basic, are adequate as are meals but of course that what was expecrted and at the low prices charged who can complain. Even so, the ambience of the foyer and the attitude of the staff makes it feel as if its a grade above the usual Holiday Inn.
Situated very convenient to the airport and close to Alicante makes it an ideal stop-over location or base for a couple of days to explore Alicante and the surroundings without being snarled up in the city traffic and the one way systems.

“Great Place to stay!!!!”

The hotel is only about ten minutes away from the airport and then only 5 minutes from the city centre. The staff were warm and friendy; making every effort to answer our questions and provide help. Our room was spacious and clean with a wonderful view of the sea. A car would be handy, as you can't really walk anywhere from the hotel, however we quickly solved this problem by using the frequent and cheap (1 euro to anywhere!) bus service. There are bus stops outside the hotel and the buses go straight to Alicante centre or towards Urbanova, which has splendid beaches which are less crowded than the ones down town. You can also get the C6 bus to the airport for one euro!
The breakfast service at the hotel was excelent; all you can eat continental breakfast with foods ranging from fresh fruit, to danish pasteries and omelete! There is also a limited dinner service however this is rather pricey compared to the meals you can get down town (which are also nicer!)

“Good Location”

Holiday Inn Express Alicante

My husband and I stayed at the Express Holiday Inn Hotel, Avenue de Elche for eleven nights. We were tired when we arrived, it was evening time. Our first impressions were positive, the hotel was clean, bright and attractive to the eye. Our room was satisfactory, and had a nice view, however when we sat down, the view was non existant. We had to stand at the window to see. It was a pity that the windows were not a foot lower, especiall as there was such a lovely view. On arrival our receptionist [Patricia] came across as cold and unwelcoming. However, during our stay others made up for her, Barbara and Edmunda were very helpful. The breakfast was sufficient in the mornings, despite the fact that it was always the same. The attendant at breakfast time, was unfriendly. When The fruit bowl emptied it was not re-filled.
The lack of information and the language barrier was disappointing, especially for people staying on a holiday for eleven days. We did not discover that the Urbenova beach was only a euro ride away by bus until the last few days, despite the fact that we discussed the unaccessible beach across the road from the hotel with the same receptionist we met on our arrival. There was no place at the hotel to sit and relax or lounge about. The chairs were not cosy or inviting to relax in. There were no outdoor facilities, no seating or eating area. For people staying eleven days it was a complete disaster of a hotel, but having said that, it was located prefectly for the bus route to the city and the airport, so each day we went to the city, but I would have preferred to have gone to Urbanova beach or other areas, in the mornings and to the city in the evenings. We had to figure out everything ourselves, as Patricia was on most days and we found her unenthusiastic, she had never heard of the open market at the bull ring, so we had to find it by asking people on the streets. It was a wonderful market and we found it hard to understand how she had never heard of it, she lacked local knowledge. We felt that if she was interested enough in helping us, she would have made enquiries from one of her colleagues about the market we always felt that she cut us short. Having said all of this, we did make the best of our stay, we would stay there again, but only for a weekend or a day or two. Never again for so long......Hope this is helpful.... Maggie

Only stayed for one night following a late flight into Alicante Airport. Hotel was very easy to locate, and being just over four miles from the airport, also very convenient. It was obviously a quiet time at the hotel, being the 1st January, but no new year hangovers from the excellent staff, who seemed genuinely delighted to welcome visitors. Room spotlessly clean and all usual facilities in excellent condition. A substantial breakfast was included in what was a very reasonable price. I consider this to be an ideal first or last night stop if using Alicante airport. My only, and usual complaint of European hotels, is why cannot they follow their USA counterparts and give clients free Internet use, even if limited to say ten or fifteen minutes.
